Ukraine’s pig iron daily output continues rising
According to report of Metallurgprom , Ukraine ’s pig iron output increased by 1.3% in February compared to that in January.
Also, the figure indicated that the country’s average daily pig iron output goes up to reach 81,700 tons in first two weeks of March.
Besides, the average daily production of crude steel increased to 100,800 tons in first two weeks of March; that for rolled steel products hiked to 91,300 tons as well.
Iron ore prices expected to soar further after Japan 's quake
Mr. Edison Lobão, the Minster of Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, said that Japan ’s increasing demand for steel products after the massive earthquake and tsunami would push up the iron ore prices.
In fact, the spot prices of iron ore have dropped sharply after Japan’s quake as the market participant have worried about the fact that Japanese steel mills’ reduction on production would decrease the iron ore imports.
It’s known that after the devastating earthquake hit Japan , the spot prices of Indian iron ore contains 63.5% Fe declined sharply to US$170/ton CFR from US$180/ton CFR.
However, it has increased slightly to reach US$171~US$172/ton CFR this week as China ’s steel market has rebounded in these days.
In addition, Brazil ’s Vale indicated that the company’s iron ore delivery for Japan has remained normal; also, most Japan ’s major steel mills such as Nippon Steel and JFE Steel have resumed the operation.

China coal import drops to 23 month low on higher prices

Bloomberg quoted customs data showed that China net imports of coal dropped to the lowest in 23 months in February after prices increased and demand fell during the Lunar New Year holiday.
According to data released by the Beijing based Administration of Customs, net purchases of the power station fuel slumped 67% to 5 million tonnes last month from January.
Mr David Fang head of the international department at China Coal Transport and Distribution Association said higher global coal prices hampered China imports of the fuel. The weeklong Chinese Lunar New Year break also reduced demand from the world’s largest energy user.
He said that “Coal purchased dropped significantly because of the delayed effect of higher global prices. Domestic coal demand will stay weak in coming months as the weather gets warmer and hydro-power generation increases.”
