The Klamath National Forest is seeking qualified applicants to fill temporary full-time positions for the 2014 work season. Vacancy announcements covering a wide range of positions (fisheries, wildlife, recreation, timber, botany, etc. – see list following) will be posted to USAJobs in the next few weeks. Announcements will close after 14 days of taking applications. Start date and length of season will vary by position. Government provided housing or barracks space may be available in some locations. Tour of duty is generally a five-day work week of 40 base hours. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Pay Scale Info: All positions are paid an hourly rate and will vary by grade. Housing/Barracks may be available at a nominal cost to employees.
Duties: Duties may vary depending on the position. A valid driver’s license may also be required. Hours usually consists of a 40 hour work week, Monday-Friday, and some positions may require work on weekends. Work maybe physically demanding and incumbent may encounter a variety of weather conditions.
Archeological Technician – Incumbent is responsible for project design and conducting archaeological surveys in support of timber, fuels and minerals projects on the Forest.
Biological Science Technician (Fish) – Duties may include serving on a fisheries crew conducting fish and fish habitat surveys, collecting field data according to protocols and entering it into databases, aquatic organism passage projects, and water quality and riparian monitoring inspections.
Biological Science Technician (Plants) – Duties may include field surveys and removal of invasive plants, inventory and monitoring botanical species using GPS (Global Positioning System), GIS spatial layers, and processing field data in selected databases.
Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) – Duties may include serving on a wildlife crew conducting surveys and habitat monitoring for various species of interest including but not limited to Northern Spotted Owl, Northern Goshawk, and several invertebrate species. Duties also include collecting field data per accepted protocols and entering it into databases.
Botanist – Duties include field and office work to provide botanical input, effects analysis, and database management, for land management projects. Incumbent provides leadership to field crews in botanical and invasive species detection and management.
Forestry Aid (General) – Duties may include entry level work in timber, recreation, or trails. This may include assisting with surveys, data collection, campground and trail maintenance work.
Forestry Technician (Timber Sale Improvement) – Duties may include assisting in contract administration for site preparation, and plantation improvement contracts; performing survival and stocking evaluation exams using a data recorder; layout, flagging and traversing of future contract areas; and downloading stand and plot data in the corporate database.
Forestry Technician (Timber Sale Prep) – Duties include marking trees in timber sale units, flagging or painting timber unit boundaries, using GPS (Global Position System) to record unit boundaries and other unit features.
Forestry Technician (Recreation) – Responsible for maintaining developed recreation sites, including campgrounds and day use areas. Duties include cleaning fire rings, cleaning restrooms, hauling trash and recycling and completing maintenance and upgrade projects such as painting facilities and installing fire rings.
Forestry Technician (Wilderness) – Duties include visiting remote wilderness locations, maintaining campsites, performing wilderness monitoring, inspecting commercial outfitters and guides, clearing trails and educating the public. This position requires hiking up to 10 miles in a day, carrying a 50lb backpack, carrying and using hand tools, and spending up to 10 consecutive days in the backcountry working in remote locations.
Forestry Technician (Trails) – Duties include using hand tools such as picks, shovels, axes and crosscut saws to maintain remote wilderness trails. The incumbent will often work in the vicinity of pack stock (horses and mules). This position requires hiking up to 10 miles in a day, carrying a 50lb backpack, carrying and using hand tools, and spending up to 10 consecutive days in the backcountry working in remote locations.
Animal Packer – Duties include fitting horses and mules with riding and pack saddles, preparing loads, packing stock, maintaining tack, riding and leading a string of mules to remote locations on wilderness trails, feeding and grooming animals, loading and unloading stock in trailers, driving loaded stock trailers on unpaved mountain roads, and managing stock for up to 10 consecutive days in the backcountry, including turning out at night and catching in the morning. This position requires working with horses and mules, lifting up to 80 lb. loads, knowledge of basic animal health and driving and towing horse trailers on mountain roads.
Range Technician - Duties include monitoring of livestock use in range allotments, managing allotment infrastructure, and communication with District Rangeland Specialist and permittees.
Visitor Information Assistant – Responsibilities include customer service at the front desk of a district or supervisors office. Duties include providing customer service, answering general forest questions from the public, serving as a collection officer selling general forest products and general clerical duties.
Engineering Equipment Operator – Incumbent operates and maintains engineering equipment. Applicant operates one or more types of heavy equipment, such as graders, tractors with bulldozer or angle dozer blades, front-end loaders, backhoes, trench diggers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments. Work is generally done on roads located in steep terrain. Applicant maintains ditches, road shoulders, and beds and firelines and clears brush, tree stumps and rocks. The work can be physically demanding, performed at times under arduous conditions (e.g. heat, humidity, and insects).
