Course Description This course is designed to provide students the opportunity to use and practice their skills related to community participation, communication, socialization, functional academics, and other related IEP goals and objectives in “real life” situations and experiences. Students will access a variety of community locations, such as grocery stores, malls, museums, parks, recreational facilities (YMCA), and other special events in order to support generalization of skills that have been previously taught in the classroom setting.

Course Objectives Course objectives are identified by each student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) under the transition area of Independent living and community participation.

Grading Policy: Edison High School has taken on a new grading policy for the 2016-2017 school year. Students will be graded on a proficiency scale ranging from 0-8. Students in the DCD program will adopt a version of this scale. Students will continue to be graded according to the adaptations section in their IEP’s on a credit/no credit basis, unless otherwise specified by the IEP team. Students will be graded on citizenship and are given performance comments on a quarterly basis.

*Credit will be awarded if the student performs at a 3 or higher. No Credit will be given if the student is performing at a 2 or lower.

Assignments: Students will apply their skills in real life situations, with the assistance of staff, as needed. Students are expected to be flexible about their expectations (times, routines, etc.), try to be patient and considerate of other people/patrons in the community, and try to present their best appearance and behavior in the community.
