Week 12 Newsletter

(November 20th – 24th)

Grade 4

This Past Week’s Events

Grade 4 students started their weekly Friday spelling tests again. As today was the first one since last year, students were reminded of spatially organizing their work into a list form neatly and self-correcting their own tests. Prior to the spelling test, the students learned about different types of clothing worn throughout the world. Teachers were particularly looking for students to write the sounds their heard especially the phonetics letter combinations including “–igh”, “–ck”, and “–oo”.
This week’s curriculum focused on pieces of clothing used in both hot and cold climates in addition to learning new and specific words related to common types of clothing. The students also created types of clothing for the countries they are creating.

Next Week’s Expectations

Next week, we will continue our study of different cultures around the world and we will prepare for a trip to the Hakka Cultural Centre and Park in Taipei. Students will learn about the Hakka culture in China, Taiwan, and beyond. The trip will cover topics we have recently gone over in class including housing, clothing, and transportation. The words learning in these topics can also be used to talk about all cultures. We hope that students can make the connection from the classroom content to their world around them!

Students will continue to practice chunking the sounds of words to help them improve their spelling. We will be covering more key words and letter sounds throughout the week. We want students to recognize the sounds that make up a word, so that they can sound out the words when writing independently.

Some sounds require memorizing, such as the “–igh” sound, but the majority of sounds can be sounded out by chunking the word into pieces.

This Friday, students will be given a second spelling test on the key words. The purpose of having spelling tests is to challenge students to use this chunking of the words to help them to spell better.

Homework

This coming week we will be using the same homework board of the past two weeks.

Many of the subtopics being covered in the Hakka activities are the same as the last few weeks, such as, homes, transportation, location, and clothing. However, please consider this week the students must use this knowledge and apply it to talk about Hakka People. So, review is still necessary, so that students can make these connections of the words and social conventions learned in class to a local cultural group. We are especially looking for students to apply this knowledge on their fieldtrip to the Hakka Park!
