Kindness, Caring, Compassion

Objective: By creating their journals and by doing kind acts for others this week, the students will learn to display caring, compassion, and kindness for others in their daily lives.

Materials Needed:

Colored folders

Paper

Pencils, crayons, and markers

Rulers

Procedure: Discuss the concept of kindness with the students. Give some examples of kindness and allow the students to talk about kind things they have done and kind things others have done for them.

Explain to the students they will be keeping kindness journals this week. They will decorate a folder which will be divided into two sections. The first section will be “kind things I did today.” The second section will be “kind things others have done for me today.”

The students will make entries under each heading every day. Remind them that people may do kind things for them that they take for granted, such as when Dad drives to soccer practice or when Mom makes a favorite meal.

The students can illustrate, color, and decorate their journals as they go.

At the end of the week discuss outcomes, and continue the project with discussion all year.

Expected Outcomes: Students will feel a sense of pride because they are being kind to others. They will develop a positive and caring attitude and will grow to realize how much small kindnesses will be appreciated.
