Biodiversity (ppt)
Definition: Biodiversity:
There are three components to Biodiversity:
1. Diversity of ______
Example:
2. Diversity of ______
Example:
3. Variety of ______
Example:
Threats to Biodiversity (list a couple):
What affects the biodiversity of an ecosystem?
**** ______conditions decrease biodiversity.
There are fewer species in areas that are extremely ______or ______or in areas that are very ______or ______.
What do we get from biodiversity? (List all six)
Why preserve biodiversity:
n Medical and Economic ______
n Green plants help remove access ______from the atmosphere and release ______into the atmosphere. This helps to decrease the effects of global ______.
n To satisfy human ______– hunting, fishing, agriculture – we need biodiversity for our ______.
n Food chains and ______. We know that all species are connected in some way.
What can we do?
n Buy ______– meat, fruits and vegetables
n Reduce the use of ______and ______.
n Conserve ______– lower the heat in your house, turn of your lights and electronics when not in use, etc.
n Start using ______shopping bags instead of plastic bags!
n Reuse, reduce and ______!
n Carpool, public transit, walk and ______!
Biodiversity and Sustainability (p. 325-330)
Every month, new species are being discovered.
Name 3 species that were discovered in the deep waters of Canada’s Atlantic Coast and off the coast of Australia:
Definitions:
Biodiversity
Resilience
In order for biodiversity to remain high, diverse ecosystems need to remain sustainable. Preserving and protecting individual species and the ecosystems they inhabit are critical to maintaining biodiversity and sustainability on Earth.
The more diverse the ecosystem, the more resilient the ecosystem will be.
Read the paragraph on top of page 326 and reply to question # 9 on page 327 of the text book.
Answer:
Threats to Biodiversity and Sustainability (p. 326-330)
Deforestation / Draining Wetlands / Alien and Invasive Species / OverexploitationDefinition / Explanation of each threat
Drawing (any picture that represents the threat)
Why/How? (Why is this topic a threat to biodiversity?)
Threats to the sustainability of local ecosystems (example given in the text that has occurred right here in Canada/N.S)
