Writing Similes

Definition:

“A simile, like a metaphor, is a comparison between two unrelated nouns. A simile functions somewhat differently in a poem than a metaphor does. A poet sometimes uses a simile rather than a metaphor for rhythm, sound, or syntax. The lines below do not make sense without the work like.

The wind swept the town like a broom.

Their ideas ignited like fire.” Shelley Tucker author of Writing Poetry

Examples
The man is like a tornado. Simile

The man is tornado. Metaphor

My skin was like a tomato, red and tight. Simile

My skin was a tomato, red and tight. Metaphor

Practice

First write similes by adding nouns on the bines..

· Television is like a pacifier.

· Night is like a blanket.

Then answer the questions Who? What? Where? When? or How? about some of your comparisons.

Example – The breeze is like a whisper (where?) in the morning.

1. Summer is like __________________________________________________________________

2. Sleep is like ____________________________________________________________________

3. School is like ____________________________________________________________________

4. Love is like _____________________________________________________________________

5. Tears are like ___________________________________________________________________
