The Silhouette Project:
My name is Linda Lajoie. I lost my son, an Afghanistan Veteran, in December 2014 to suicide. At the time of his death there was so much I did not know. I didn’t know that 20 (in 2014 the statistic was 22) veterans a day are taking their own life. I didn’t know that there was help out there, not only for my son but for me. I don’t want to see another family go through the pain and loss that our family has so I am developing The Silhouette Project.
On April 22, 2017, AMVETS National Veteran Suicide Awareness Day, I will be displaying 20 life size veteran silhouettes. My hope is to give each silhouette a name of a veteran from Maine lost to this tragic epidemic. I want people to walk through the silhouettes and realize they are not faceless statistics but real people with friends and families left behind. If possible I would like living veterans to “adopt” one of the names on a silhouette and learn about that veteran’s life and family in order to pass it along to others, not only to keep the lost veteran’s memory alive but to serve as a reminder of the pain that suicide leaves behind.
Attached is a form for anyone that wants to help to fill out and return to me, you can fill it right out and e-mail it back. If you are submitting the name of a veteran lost to suicide, please share their/your story with me in the e-mail when sending this form back.
