Impressions from the President’s Blotter

President George launched into several housekeeping issues:

· There are to be 2 new inductees at next week’s meeting (which should be today).

· The search for Felipe’s book has been concluded, successfully.

· The St.George’s Rotary Club BBQ has been rescheduled for 30th September.

· Delano Ingham reminded the Club that we are the hosts for this year’s On-To-Bermuda, giving details of the dates for the Banquet and Home Hospitality.

Meeting of 21st September

Andrew Caulfield was pleased (and relieved) to introduce last week’s Speaker as Jim Brock of the Hamilton Club. Jim kindly stepped in to speak at short notice in lieu of the scheduled speaker and offered to speak on pretty much any subject though eventually whittled this down to 7 which we presumed to be his stronger subjects.

Jim’s presentation centered on the progression of Bermuda from an agricultural economy through its development as a winter tourist resort and the birth of the reinsurance business. Calling upon his substantial experience as Financial Secretary, amongst other positions, Jim led us through the establishment of ELBON and major oil companies domiciled on the Island, the formation of captives including ODECO which was subsequently 25 years in liquidation. There were many issues with the IRS over the question of captives.

1984 was a notable year; the disaster at 3-Mile Island led to reinsurers excepting nuclear risks since they could not be measured. This ultimately led to the self-insurance of these companies. Jim advised that Bermuda welcomed these companies and boasted that they could be formed locally in 15 days, as compared with 2 years in the US.

The speaker was thanked by George Cubbon.

The raffle was won by Yvette Swan.

He’s back…..

“People can read everything they want into it when they hear ‘faith-based initiative’. That all of a sudden open’s everybody’s imagination in the world to vast possibilities, some of which exist and some which don’t.”
