This course (Academic: 1.0 credit) offers students the opportunity to learn the basic techniques and skills of leadership. Students will also have the opportunity to construct, propose and initiate project-planning models to affect change. Students will practice their leadership skills and learn to succeed by creating real life events.

Leadership 12 is a personal development course designed to provide students experiences to develop a personal philosophy of leadership that is based on their core beliefs and values in relation to socially responsible leadership. They will understand the concept of socially responsible leadership and how it impacts economic, social, environmental and ethical issues. Students of Leadership 12 are required to be supportive of their school and community. It is imperative that students recognize they will be required to develop an understanding of their school and acceptance of the responsibilities needed to strengthen its culture and relationships. Leadership 12 students will be expected to model positive, principled leadership attributes as they are carrying out these responsibilities. They will also be required to spend time outside of class planning and attending events.

Materials Required:

Students will require a binder, loose leaf, pens, a set of markers, two rolls of masking tape, and a lanyard.

Student leaders will:

*Define concepts, terms and practices relating to leadership and compare theories and styles of leadership.

*Set goals and objectives and describe the relationships between goals and objectives, and between motivation, achievement, success and ambition.

*Develop a plan that includes goals, objectives and strategies to assess achievement and success of the plan.

*Implement strategies/models for managing plan elements.

*Develop techniques of leading, delegating responsibility and following through with projects.

*Assess the outcomes of the plan and write recommendations as to how the plan or assessment strategies could be improved for future use.

*Identify elements within a project that may need managing; e.g. time, personnel, stress and other resources.

*Use techniques of internal and external communication that establish good public relations with various groups throughout the school and the community it serves.

*Conduct meetings using parliamentary procedure.

*Explain and demonstrate consensus seeking and conflict management in a group situation.

*Organize and participate in leadership activities within the school, volunteer agencies and community structures.

*Identify sources of power groups that function in the school and community and recognize the different viewpoints that students, teachers, administration and community members have regarding issues.

*Recognize disagreements and see compromises within student groups.
