THE GRELTON CONSERVATION CLUB

The Grelton Conservation Club is a self-supported group of similarly interested landowners and environmentally aware hunters, located in the north central region of

Jefferson County, Wisconsin.

Individuals with a common desire to support and promote the local pheasant population formed the group in 1980. This included an active program of raising and releasing pheasants, preserving wildlife habitat where ever possible and improving landowner/hunter relationships.

Who we are:

The Grelton Conservation Club was formed in 1980 by a few local sportsmen who were interested in helping area farmers who had trouble with hunters trespassing on their property. One of these sportsmen, Donald Schroeder, Sr. had a dream of forming an organization that would not only assist the farmers with their trespassing problem but also increase the pheasant population along with improving habitat.

The original mission was to raise and release pheasants not so much for hunting, but more for propagation purposes. Working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources the original five club members planned and implemented their ideas and succeeded. Two of the “old timers”, Frank Brom and Howie Block took up the task by purchasing pheasant eggs and incubating them until they hatched. Between 1000 and 1500 chicks per year were raised until they were old enough to be released on the landowner’s properties. Because of the higher costs and the time involved, we currently purchase pheasants that are ready to be released and locate them in the best available habitat.

We are a non-profit organization and today have over 30 club members and over 60 local landowner members. Most of these properties are located in Jefferson County between the Rock and Crawfish Rivers and from State Highway 19 to County Road B. There are also member landowners in outlying areas and in Southern Dodge County. Most of the landowner’s properties have been posted indicating that prior permission must be obtained prior to gaining access.

Landowners:

We honor our landowners each year by offering a fun day of relaxation by having a summer picnic. We supply all the food, refreshments, and entertainment. This popular social event brings everyone together and a good time is had by all.

Promoting our club:

While still active in the pheasant propagation program, our other major activity is the awarding of scholarships to local deserving youth who are pursuing their education in the fields of agriculture, natural resources, conservation or related degrees. Upon the passing of our founder our largest scholarship awarded annually is the Donald Schroeder, Sr. Memorial Scholarship.

Our latest endeavor was forming our Conservation, Education and Outreach program. Under this program we offer numerous hunter safety classes culminating in actual hands on shooting. And in conjunction with the Wisconsin DNR, hold a fall youth mentor pheasant hunt for successful hunter safety graduates.

The Grelton Conservation Club is a proud member of organization of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation.
