Position Description: Staff Designer/Reviewer, Advanced Starship Design Bureau

STARFLEET has many members with rich creativity and a fascination with the vehicles and stations that populate the Star Trek Universe. In recognition of this, we seek to expand the Advanced Starship Design Bureau (ASDB) to allow more members to be part of the fun of both playing with starship/station designs, but also brainstorming about the technologies behind those ships and stations. ASDB therefore invites members to volunteer for Staff Designer/Reviewer.

What follows are the specific criteria for the position of Staff Designer/Reviewer, Advanced Starship Design Bureau:

--------------------

Team members of the Advanced Starship Design Bureau are charged with assisting STARFLEET members/chapters in the creation of new starship/station designs and/or the upgrade/modification of existing designs within the framework of a coherent, established Star Trek Universe. They may also be invited to participate in creative brainstorming sessions for "non-official" design work for fun and amusement, even if not necessarily for the creation of new "formally accepted" designs for chapter use.

The successful candidate will:

1] Be comfortable with and possess at least a general understanding of Star Trek technology and engineering in all eras of the Star Trek Universe in which the fictional Star Fleet operates (from the 22nd through 24th Centuries).

2] Be aware of and at least broadly comfortable with Star Trek engineering and starship design as explicated in fan-tech, as well as Paramount-tech, materials (manuals, blueprints, and such).

3] Be willing to participate in brainstorming sessions to help guide groups designing starships/stations to develop their projects to fit realistically within the existing framework. (e.g., if we already have 2 extant shuttlecarrier designs {and "actually", we have about 8 right now}, a group creating a third should show that the new design does something that the others do not.) New designs created simply for the purpose of being new will not necessarily be accepted for organizational use (solely-fictional projects would of course not need to meet this criterion), but the ASDB can assist groups in giving the new design a fresh characteristic that might allow its acceptance, or can help the group to choose a suitable design from the existing inventory.

4] Be aware of and comfortable with the basic principles of starship design as outlined in the guidance document, "So You Want to Design a Starship...?", which establishes the basic tenets used by DTS and ASDB to assess design proposals.

The ability to access the Internet and communicate on-line, particularly using IRC, is highly recommended.

--------------------

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis from interested members. ASDB makes no guarantee of how many design ideas will be taken up during any given time period. Applicants should indicate any particular area of technological interest or expertise and provide a list of the primary resources/references they use when developing information.

Applications may be sent to:
