1. Primary Concept/Goal: To identify qualities of music that convey different moods and characteristics.
2. Objective: The student will identify the animal sounds and the correlating instrument that produces them.
3. Curriculum Link:
National Standards: #6: Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.

4. Materials:
Computer (and all components)
Projector
Proper hookup cables
External speakers

5. Procedure:
- Reinforcement of Previous Concepts:
- The teacher will review the previous lesson about The Four Seasons, checking for understanding of the concept of music that paints a picture.
- Learning Events:
- The teacher will present the PowerPoint lesson, reading and discussing each slide, frequently asking questions to check for student comprehension and investment in objective.
- Who was Saint-Saens?
- Why did he write The Carnival of Animals?
- What aspects characterize the sounds of animals?
- What animals are characterized in this piece?
- What instruments are used in this piece?
- Guided Practice, Independent Practice:
- The teacher will ask students to hypothesize which instruments represent each animal.
- The students will collaborate to discover which animal is represented in each musical excerpt.
- Summary, Assessment and Closing:
- The students will match the instrument with the animal it represents in the piece.
- Did the students recognize which instruments were used to represent each animal? Did the students recognize which animal was being represented when listening to the musical excerpts?
- The teacher will conclude the lesson by challenging the students to line up and return to their classrooms in the mood and character of mice.
6. Evaluation:
Informal, embedded assessment with aural/visual observation of individuals responding to questioning during the presentation and participating in the final assessment and manner of departure.
