George A. Atzerodt—age 33

German immigrant carriage painter and boatman from Port Tobacco, MD. Allegedly assigned to kill Andrew Johnson, but did not attempt to do so. Hanged, July 7, 1865

Mary Elizabeth Jenkins Surratt—age 42

Widow. Keeper of boarding house where conspirators sometimes met. Hanged, July 7, 1865.

Dr. Samuel Alexander Mudd—age 32

Physician who set JWB’s broken leg. Sentenced to life imprisonment. Released 1869, died 1883.

Samuel Bland Arnold—age 28

Former schoolmate of JWB. Commissary clerk, had served in CSA army.

Involved in kidnap plot, but not assassination. Sentenced to life imprisonment. Released 1869, died 1906.

Michael O’Laughlin—age 27

Former schoolmate of JWB. Feed store clerk. Involved in kidnap plot but not assassination. Sentenced to life imprisonment. Died in prison of yellow fever—1867

Edman Spangler—age about 40

Stage hand at Ford’s Theatre. Sentenced to six years imprisonment. Released 1869, died 1875.

John Harrison Surratt, Jr.—age 21

Confederate agent. Son of Mary Surratt. Fled the county. Joined Papal Guards. Apprehended and tried—1867; jury dismissed case, died 1902.
