March 2002
Around Here
Medxtravaganza on March 8 and the College’s 30th anniversary on March 11 kicked off the month with lots of campus visitors, and a party (see photos on last two pages).
Medxtravaganza drew approximately 200 pre-med advisors, faculty and prospective students for an action packed day of tours, application tips and networking.
The 30th anniversary was observed with good wishes, refreshments, and semi-fabulous door prizes.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day
As you slide down the banister of life, may the splinters never point in the wrong direction.

OFF Honored at Reception
Steven Buck, D.O., and OFF board member, Sherri Wise, OFFpresident, and Larry Dullye, D.O., and OFF chairman, unveil a plaque at the Women’s Health Center.
Osteopathic Founders Foundation (OFF) representatives were honored recently at a reception at the Women’s Health Center at the OSU Health Care Center, hosted by the Center for Health Sciences.
The Women’s Center provides comprehensive health care for low income and working poor patients. It is slated to open a new mammography unit funded by the Chapman Foundation, in the near future.
OFF board members and staff, along with clinic staff and Center for Health Sciences representatives, dedicated a plaque in the entrance area of the of the women’s center. Dr. Allen unveiled the plaque, which acknowledges the support of the foundation to the center. He also thanked the founders for their support of the clinic and osteopathic medicine.
OFF has donated nearly $500,000 to health care causes at the College in recent years.
No Fear
Dr. Allen and Ursula Scott show no fear as
they tempt fate in “The Crusher.”
Library Looking Good
Recent medical library renovations make way for more storage and better study facilities, says Ursula Scott. “The Crusher” (if you don’t use it correctly) allows the same use of floor space, but more storage. The shelves are motorized and allow room for almost 10 years of growth before it is necessary to microfilm.
The 27 new study carrels have overhead shelves, electrical outlets, automatically activated lighting, and internet/network hookups. New or reupholstered chairs are comfy, and carrels are soundproofed.

Terrific Trio
Bavette Leeper, Toni Hart and Tami Watters pretend to sum up the ingredients in the chili at a recent Staff Advisory Council luncheon that raised more than $500 for the American Heart Association and the SAC scholarship fund.
Teacher Now is Peer
If your mom told you it’s a small world, turns out she was right (after all). Just ask Derek Matheson and Jeff Hunt, both MS IIs.
They’ll tell you that Hunt was Matheson’s instructor at the University of Arkansas, where Matheson earned a degree in microbiology. Neither knew the other was headed for the College of Osteopathic Medicine until they encountered each other here at OSU.
Katie Crawford Recovering
Sandy Cooper, director of human resources, reports that Katie Crawford, reception coordinator, has had a stroke and now is recovering at Broken Arrow Rehabilitation Center. “Katie said to tell everyone she misses us, “ Sandy said. Crawford has worked for the college in various positions for the past 23 years.

Family Fund in a Nutshell
Every budget has to cope with unanticipated costs. At the Center for Health Sciences, these costs can be met through the new Family Fund (for our center family). Donations go to the center’s OSU Foundation account and are used here on our campus, providing monies to help meet unanticipated, non-budgeted items that state dollars do not cover. A pledge or gift of $100 or more gets you a Family Fund baseball cap. Call Brenda Haggard, ext. 8420, for more information.
