Test #1 Review: Geography

· Five Themes of Geography: Be able to name and explain what each is about, know the questions associated with each theme, be able to identify and give examples of them from either a short-text OR multiple choice examples.

o Revisit the readings on Patmos (wikispaces), Nepal (workbook), and Indonesia (wikispace). You will be given the first 3-4 paragraphs of one of these readings and you must identify an example from the text of each of the five themes of geography and explain how that part of the text demonstrates the theme.

o What to Study: Your notes on the definitions of the 5 themes, multiple choice from the second quiz (come see me to review incorrect answers), examples from class, workbook pages related to identifying the five themes, online resources describing the five themes of geography.

· Cardinal Directions, Ordinate Directions, and Relative Location: be prepared to look at a map and describe the relative location of a country using ordinate and cardinal directions.

o What to Study: The definitions of cardinal and ordinate directions and relative location, your first quiz when you had to identify the countries/directions of the places surrounding Chad.

· Equator, Prime Meridian, Latitude, and Longitude: be able to describe the definitions and plot and label each line on a map.

o What to Study: Your notes on these terms, maps from notes or online resources that label each of these geographical features, your results on this question from the first quiz.

· Environmental Issues: Be able to define and identify the following: deforestation, extinction, poaching, greenhouse gases, desertification, conservation, smog.

o What to Study: Your notes on these terms and the articles on pages 57-61 of your workbook and page 64.

· Geography and Development: define both and explain how geography impacts development both positively and negatively (helps and hinders)

o What to Study: Your notes on these topics, previous responses on quizzes 1 and 2, and page 77 of your workbook.

· Image Analysis: you will be given an image and you must create a T-chart explaining the environmental factors in the image and how they are used, adapted, and changed by humans.

o What to Study: Your notes from when we did this in class on Friday (10/6)

· Short answers:

o Pick two environmental issues that we studied in class (deforestation, extinction, poaching, greenhouse gases, desertification, conservation, smog), explain what are some common causes and effects between the two issues and how does human activity impact these issues both positively and negatively.

§ What to Study: Your notes on these terms and the articles on pages 57-61 of your workbook and page 64. Re-read these texts to identify common causes and effects and the impact of human activity. Your annotations in your workbook should help you.

o Pick one environmental issue (deforestation, extinction, poaching, greenhouse gases, desertification, conservation, smog) and propose a solution to this problem. Be specific in explaining how your solution would help solve the problem.

§ What to Study: Your notes on these terms and the articles on pages 57-61 of your workbook and page 64. Re-read these texts to identify common causes and effects and the impact of human activity. Your annotations in your workbook should help you. For solutions, study page 63 which you completed in class.

· Short Essay (3-4 paragraphs):

o Explain how the geography of a city, country, or region can both help and hinder the development of the area. Use specific examples from class or your own knowledge of a city/country/region.

§ What to Study: Your notes on geography and development, your responses from quizzes 1 and 2, and page 77 of your workbook. You may choose two images from 67-75 to use as an example for your writing.
