SUBJECT: Celebrate Freedom Week and Change in Pledge to the Texas Flag

Two acts passed by the 80th Legislature take effect in the 2007 – 2008 school year. They are House Bill (HB) 708, relating to Celebrate Freedom Week in public schools, and HB 1034, relating to the pledge of allegiance to the state flag.

HB 708

Celebrate Freedom Week has been moved from the week of November 11 to the

week of September 17, effective beginning with the 2007 – 2008 school year. The purpose of Celebrate Freedom Week is “to educate students about the sacrifices made for freedom in the founding of this country and the values on which this country was founded….” Sunday is considered the first day of the week in the legislation. HB 1034

The pledge of allegiance to the state flag has been changed to add “one state

under God.” This act takes effect immediately. The pledge to the Texas flag now is: “Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God,

one and indivisible.”
