SUMMER WRITING ACTIVITIES FOR YOUNG AUTHORS

1. Keep a journal of things that happen over the summer. Every day write a story about the things you do and the places you go. (Ask someone else in your family to keep a journal, too. Then take time each day to share your adventures with each other!)

2. Send postcards to family and friends. The postcards do not have to be scenic cards from a vacation spot. You can get postcards from the post office that are already stamped. Grandparents love to get mail from their grandchildren. (So does your teacher!)

3. Making lists can be a part of writing. If your family is planning a vacation, make a list of the clothes that you will need, the toys and games you may want to take, and the things you would like to do.

4. Make a list of chores to do around the house. Decide which chore you like to do the most and which you like to do the least. Explain why you feel this way about the chores.

5. Using newspaper ads, write a shopping list of things you might want to buy. (Or pretend you have a certain amount of money to spend and see what you could buy)

6. Select something that grows in your yard. Keep an observation notebook and describe weekly how the item changes over the summer.

7. Read a story. Then write a different ending for the story.

8. Write a “love note” for Mom or Dad and put it in their lunch bag or briefcase.

9. Write a letter to your teacher telling her about the exciting things you are doing over the summer. Send to your school.

10. Plan your favorite summer menu. Make a list of nutritious foods your family would love to eat.

11. Write a poem just for fun. Let your thoughts flow and see how poetic you can be!

12. Ask Mom or Dad to set up a family writing center with a bulletin board where favorite writings, notes, and messages can be posted.

13. Think of your own creative ways you can practice your writing skill throughout the summer months. Share your writings with those you love!!
