Student Intern Liability Insurance

Requirement

BYU-Idaho Legal Counsel requires that all student interns receiving academic credit be covered by liability insurance. The academic credit ties their experience to BYU-Idaho and can therefore make the University liable. If a student drops his/her internship after agreements have been completed, it is his/her and the Department Internship Coordinator’s responsibility to notify the Academic Discovery Center to discontinue coverage.

Policy

BYU-Idaho will provide liability insurance for the student intern to cover damage or harm caused by the student in the amount of $1,000,000 per student, per occurrence, when all agreements have been completed and returned to the BYU-Idaho Academic Discovery Center.

Liability insurance premiums are paid by the BYU-Idaho Academic Discovery Center.

It is important that all students be registered for their internship through the Academic Discovery Center to ensure that liability insurance coverage is in place BEFORE the student begins his/her internship experience. Coverage typically begins at the start of the month in which the semester begins and concludes at the end of the month in which the semester ends. In special circumstances coverage can be extended for an additional period of time.

Claims

If a student is involved in an incident that may be covered by liability insurance, please contact the BYU-Idaho Academic Discovery Center.

Students may be responsible to pay a deductible in conjunction with any claims made.
