Course Description & Prerequisites:

The study of current decision making and administrative concepts that relate to operating an agri-business. Areas of emphasis include business organization, financial management and control, marketing, production processes, and personal management. PREREQUISITE: Student will be required to complete one supervised occupational experience prior to enrolling for this course. The student will be required to complete a term project that analyzes an agri-business firm's organization, financing, marketing techniques, production processes, and personnel management and training. Lecture.

Methods of Student Evaluation and Grading Scale:

Students will be evaluated on the following:

1. One Midterm Exam & One Final Exam @ 150 points each 300 points

2. Fifteen study guides @ 10 points each 150 points

3. Fifteen case studies @ 10 points each 150 points

4. Class Participation 100 points

5. Class Project (3-4 page paper on history of any ag business) 100 points

TOTAL 800 points

Students will be graded according to the following scale: 90% A, 80% B, 70% C, 60% D.

Course Objectives/Outcomes:

Successful completers will:

1. Describe the size and scope of agribusiness.

2. Explain the importance and impact that agribusiness has on the entire economy.

3. Define management and explain the role of a manager.

4. List and describe the functions of management.

5. Determine the factors involved in selecting the best organizational form for an agribusiness.

6. Summarize the effect of supply and demand on producers and consumers as they respond to price levels.

7. Interpret the different kinds of financial ratios and their use.

8. Describe various kinds of loans, funds, and other capital available.

9. Analyze the factors affecting operational and pricing efficiency.

10. Develop method for analyzing competition.

11. Describe the role of sales and selling in generating agribusiness profits.

12. Explain the interrelationships of salespeople, customers, and the business.

Student Assignment/Attendance Policy:

  1. All assignments must be turned in by deadlines listed below. Late work will be accepted and/or scored at my discretion. If accepted, late work may result in a loss of participation points.
  2. Students are expected to practice good ethics in completing and submitting work.
  3. Regular log-ins to D2L and prompt attendance are strongly encouraged to successfully complete the course. It is very important to complete the assignments in a timely manner! Participation points will be based on completing assignments on time as well as your attendance. You will be allowed 2 absences before participation points are deducted for attendance.
  4. Please turn cell phones and any other electronic devices (MP3 players, Ipod’s, etc.) off while in class unless other arrangements have been made with the instructor.
  5. If you have any special needs, please let the instructor know as soon as possible. If you have any learning issues or concerns, you may contact the instructor or Kalie Naas, Coordinator of Academic Assistance. Her office is located in the Science Building.
