PREREQUISITE: Concurrent enrollment of PHTE 101 and 102, and Successful completion of at least seven weeks of PHTE 102
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides the implementation of technical skills performed by the Pharmacy Technician in the community and hospital settings. The student will be expected to apply concepts learned in PHTE 101, PHTE 102, PHTE 103, and PHTE 104 while demonstrating an increased mastery of skills.
COURSE OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this internship students will be able to:
· Ability to exhibit professionalism as an allied health team member
· Identify all aspects of drug orders
· Properly label a given drug
· Reconstitute solutions according to manufactures directions
· Utilize equipment used in dosage measurements
· Work in a pharmacy setting in a pharmacy technician role (one internship in the community setting, and one internship in the hospital setting)
· Exhibit self-directed learning and initiative
· Demonstrate dependability and accountability with sound decision making skills

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: PHTE 255 is a non-paid clinical internship that provides work based training in a pharmacy setting.
EVALUATION METHOD: Interview evaluation, two supervisor evaluations, student internship final report (paper), student personal evaluation, portfolio submission.
Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate achievement of the course objectives by obtaining a final minimum grade of seventy-eight (78%), as measured by teacher made evaluation tool and written work.
GRADING SCALE: The following grading scale will be in effect for this course:
A Excellent 96-100%
A- 93-95%
B+ 90-92%
B Good 87-89%
B- 84-86%
C Average 78-80%
C- Below Standard 75-77%D+ 72-74%
D 69-71%
D- 66-68%
E/F Failing 67 & below
W Withdraw, no credit awarded
X Audit, no credit awarded
I Incomplete, no credit
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatory and necessary for successful completion of this course.
TESTING POLICY: There are no tests in PHTE 255.
NOTICE: Representative student work will be used as a part of SMC’s on-going curriculum assessment program.
OTHER COURSE
EXPECTATIONS:
· Intern will apply for acceptance into Certified Pharmacy Technician Internship with the program coordinator.
· Once accepted the internship sites will be compiled and provided upon request.
· Intern must interview with pharmacy supervisor and both sign agreement form.
· Intern is personally responsible for making sure supervisor is given evaluation forms and reminded to complete the evaluations when designated hours are completed.
· Intern is to submit evaluations and paper by due date.
· Exit interview with program coordinator is necessary to be scheduled by the intern.
ACCEPTABLE USE OF PERSONAL COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
All phones, iPods, BlackBerries, Palm Pilots, pagers, laptops and other technological devices
including devices capable of taking photographs must be turned off or placed on vibrate mode and
may not be brought out during class. If you are expecting or receiving an urgent call, you are
required to leave the classroom before answering. Violation of this policy will result in your
removal from the classroom for the class period. Multiple violations of this policy will be referred
to the appropriate dean for disciplinary action. Further details or ramifications of violations may
be found elsewhere in this syllabus. The instructor has the right to modify this policy to meet the
needs of the course.
HONESTY POLICY Cheating or plagiarizing will absolutely not be tolerated at Southwestern Michigan College. Any student found cheating or plagiarizing material in any manner may be assigned a failing semester/session grade in this course. A second such incident while at SMC could result in suspension or expulsion from the institution. A student found in violation of this section of the syllabus will not be allowed to drop this course. COURSE ASSIGNMENTS
- Application submission to Certified Pharmacy Technician Internship to be completed and submitted to the program coordinator after successful completion of seven weeks PHTE 102. (Instructor progress report/referral to accompany)
- Initial internship program meeting scheduled by the program coordinator upon acceptance. Bring course pack with you to the meeting for review and discussion. Dress for success! Class registration can be scheduled upon completion of this step and coordinator approval. Bring completed resume and optional cover letter to meeting.
- Interviewing Skills Video – optional (available in TLC)
- Site selection, interview, and internship weekly hours to be negotiated with the site supervisor and documented by the intern. Submission of evaluation and time sheets are the students/interns responsibility. Weekly hour sheet to be submitted by the intern to the program coordinator.
- Send “Thank You” note to each interviewer – document for final evaluation.
- Objectives and individual goals signed by both trainer and intern, and then submitted to program coordinator.
- Student Evaluation to be completed and submitted after 93 & 185 hours.
- Supervisor Evaluation #1 – completed by the trainer and submitted after 93 hours.
- Supervisor Evaluation #2 – completed by the trainer and submitted after 185 hours.
- Supervisor Evaluation of Objectives and goals – completed by the trainer and submitted after 40, 93, & 185 hours.
- Student final report that includes self reflection and evaluation of overall experience.
- Exit interview with program coordinator. Successful completion will advance student to be eligible for second internship PHTE 255.
