Developing Church of England Education

A Diocesan Board of Education for the Future (Church of England Archbishops’ Council Education Division – July 2013)

‘There is a clear and compelling statement of why the diocese is involved in education that any person in the structure can understand and recite, as well as a strategic plan for the DBE which aligns with diocesan goals and helps to deliver them’

Diocesan Synod (March 2013)

‘This SYNOD recognises the central contribution of the Diocesan Board of Education to the mission of the Church in the Diocese of Southwark and affirms its role with diocesan schools and education chaplains as integral to the strategic development and growth of our mission and source’

President of the Board – Bishop Christopher

‘The distinct Christian Ethos of our schools promotes an awareness that as the beloved children of God we can realise our full potential in becoming the people we are created to be.’

Chair of the Board – Bishop Richard

The Church of England ha always been deeply committed to education. It played a major role in the development o the national education system in the 19th century and continues to undertake a very significant part in the very changed world of the 21st century. In the Diocese of Southwark we have 106 schools, 91 primary and 15 secondary, and they are a key and central; part of our mission. C of E schools are committed to serving the whole community in which they are set in an inclusive, yet distinctive way. This educational philosophy and practice stems from the belief that every child is unique and God-given, and our schools seek to develop their full potential within a Christian ethos which seeks to express God’s love for all people.

Diocesan Director – Mr Colin Powell

Church of England Schools lie at the heart of Mission for our Diocese. Our schools must be places of excellence, with high academic standards, where all are loved and nurtured to achieve their full potential of God given skills and talents. Prayer and Worship are central to the life of a Southwark Church of England school.
