JOB SPECIFICATION

1. PREAMBLE

The Southern Adelaide Health Service (Southern Health) was established in 2004. It brought together Flinders Medical Centre, Noarlunga Health Services and Drug and Alcohol Services Council. It includes Population & Primary Health Care, Southern Mental Health and Southern Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services, and works closely with other health providers in the southern area. Repatriation General Hospital, a public teaching hospital, formally joined Southern Health in July 2008, further consolidating the working relationship formed over the past four years.

With an annual budget in excess of $500M, Southern Health provides care for around 330,000 people living in the southern metropolitan area of Adelaide as well as providing a number of state-wide services, and services to those in the regional areas.

More than 7,000 skilled staff provide high quality patient care, education, research and health promoting services.

Repatriation General Hospital is a 300-bed acute care public hospital specialising in the care of older people and veterans. The hospital provides a range of general medical and surgical services to people living in Adelaide, and offers high quality integrated care from the acute stages through to rehabilitation.

2. SUMMARY OF THE BROAD PURPOSE OF THE POSITION and its responsibilities/duties

Under supervision, assist in the day to day technical activities of the pharmacy department, I including stores handling and distribution, pharmaceutical manufacturing and other technical pharmaceutical tasks as required.

3. REPORTING/WORKING RELATIONSHIPS (to whom the person reports, staff for whom the person is responsible, and other significant connections and working relationships within the organisation)

This position reports to the Drug Distribution Coordinator. Regular daily contact and coordination is required with other two pharmacy technicians responsible for imprest delivery of pharmaceutical to hospital wards and departments, and the dispensary technical support and courier service. Assisting pharmacists in the technical aspects of dispensing and other duties are also important aspects of this position.

4. SPECIAL CONDITIONS (such as non-metropolitan location, travel requirements, frequent overtime, etc)

· Job and Person Specifications are reviewed regularly as part of the ongoing Performance Development process.

· May be required to work within other locations of the Southern Adelaide Health Service.

· Will be required to undertake a health assessment prior to commencement.

· Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Offender History Check.

· Comply with the Principles of the Code of Fair Information Practice, adopted by the Department of Health, which regulate the collection, use, disclosure, storage and transfer of all personal patient/client information within the Department and throughout its funded service providers.

· Required to participate in a 7-day per week on-call roster which includes a Saturday morning Dispensary service and parenteral nutrition preparation and other pharmaceutical manufacturing as required.

· Must be prepared to attend relevant meetings and staff development / education activities as required.

· Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Pre-Employment Health Assessment.

4. STATEMENT OF KEY OUTCOMES AND ASSOCIATED ACTIVITIES (group in to major areas of responsibility / activity and list in descending order of importance).

Under regular supervision:

· Service the hospital drug imprest system and assemble stocks for issue using the pharmacy stock computing system.

· Assist with the preparation, compounding and dispensing of pharmaceuticals using the pharmacy stock computing system as directed by the pharmacists.

· Participate in the maintenance and receipt of stock for all pharmacy materials.

· Participate in the maintenance and receipt of stock for all pharmacy materials.

· Participate in drug expiry date monitoring programmes.

· Prepackage and label pharmaceutical preparations.

· Maintain and carry out specialised cleaning of pharmacy equipment.

· Undertake other pharmacy duties as required.

Educational/Vocational Qualifications

Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and patients.

Willingness to learn new skills and to participate in formal training programmes.

Ability to work unsupervised in an efficient and diligent manner.

Enthusiasm for hospital pharmacy technical work.

Willingness and ability to handle heavier fluid pharmaceuticals as ward imprest stock.
