Republic of Macedonia with its capital Skopje is anchored in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. It has a significant geographical position, which is determined by the natural facilities of the valleys and ravines and their important communications, as well as the relative small distance from the Aegean and the Adriatic Sea. Through Macedonia, lengthwise the Vardar Valley extends the shortest longitude between Middle Europe and the Mediterranean Sea i.e. Near East.

The country itself has a well-developed air, railway and road traffic. The air traffic runs through two international airports - in Skopje and Ohrid. The railway and road traffic are in good condition. Since 1991, when Republic of Macedonia gained its independence, it went through a lot of radical changes on political, social and economic level, with only one aim - its fast and efficient integration into high-developed countries of the world. Nowadays, Macedonia is an equal subject in the International Community, a member of the United Nations, the Partnership of Peace and a serious candidate for membership in European Union and NATO. It's also a member of many important International Associations and organizations.
For the last couple of years, in Macedonia began the process of integration of the world capital, which is the main precondition for integration into the world economy.

Ohrid Lake

Ohrid tourist area is one of the most developed parts of our country. The old part of Ohrid is a real archaeological wealth, living proof of the cultural competition between the civilizations. High on the hill, as a crown above the old part of the city, raises the citadel.
The oldest written evidence of the fortress date from the year 476, which describe the city and its two entrances: The Upper Gate and The Lower Gate.
Those were the only ways to enter and exit the city because the Samuel's fortress surrounded the hill in the length of 3000m.
Messages of the centuries and all achievements of the civilizations from ancient times, early Christianity, Middle Ages, Islam until today, are all gathered like a core inside the citadel. Other monuments are built over the ruins of the old ones, so today they should glow the splendor of time. The mountain Galicica, with its highest peak Magaro (2255m), spreads from west towards east, opposite the city. 40 villages surround the city of Ohrid, the most distant is 45 km far from the city.
"The city of poetry" - Struga is 14km northwest of Ohrid and the city Resen is 38 km east of Ohrid. Ohrid is most closely dashed by the waves of the Lake Ohrid. The Lake Prespa is located across the mountain Galicica, 20km airline from Ohrid.
The city of Ohrid, its closer surrounding, the beaches and objects at "Kaneo", "Grasnica", the localities on the east coast of the lake: "Gorica", "St. Stefan", the settlements by the lake Pestani, Trpejca, Ljubanista, St. Naum, the National park "Galichica" and others are very attractive for the visitors.
We'll only mention the most characteristic anthropogenic tourist values, such as: St. Panteleimon - the first University on Balkan and among the first in Europe, the ancient city Lychnidos, churches St. Sophia, St. John at Kaneo, Holy Mother of God Peribleptos (it's considered that in Ohrid there are churches and holy places as many as days in a year), than Tsar Samuel's fortress, the monastery St. Naum and Alapasina mosque.
Several international cultural manifestations and festivals are held out every year - Ohrid Summer Festival, Balkan Folklore Festival, Struga Poetry Evenings.
