Shih Tzu Purchase Information

We love our puppies here at Lil Country Shih Tzu and we ask that you give your new baby the same tender lover and care that they received here. We are always here to help answer any questions you have. We want you to be 100% happy and have a wonderful experience with your new puppy. Your puppy’s shot record is included with this document.

Umbilical Hernias and tight nostrils are very common with the Shih Tzu breed. They are neither life threatening nor genetic hereditary. Shih Tzu commonly snort, sniffle and snore. A clear discharge is normal, especially when the puppy is teething. Tight nostrils are very common and normally open and correct as your puppy matures. Open Fontanels (soft spots in the skull) are also common, and close as your puppy matures. It is up to each new pet owner to decide if they would like to fix an umbilical hernia at the time of spay or neuter. I do not cover any type of vet bills; the decision to fix an umbilical hernia is up to the new owner.

Your puppy is currently being fed dry grain-free Kirkland Nature’s Domain Turkey & Sweet Potato (in the Red bag at Costco). Any changes to your new puppy’s diet should be made very gradually. A bag of this food is provided with your puppy. Feeding puppies any processed human food is NOT recommended and could cause them harm. For cleanliness and sanitation purposes puppies less than 6 months old have only been trained to drink out of a water bottle instead of a bowl. These can be found at any pet store in the small animal department (the size intended for rabbits are ideal). Be aware that even the best bottles usually dribble some, so protect your flooring & puppy’s bedding from drips.

Our puppies are small dogs (usually under 10 pounds full grown) and it is recommended that they live indoors, with frequent supervised playtime outside in a fenced area. Shih Tzu are very intelligent dogs that are usually potty trained to a pad without much effort. All of our puppies are started with a washable potty pad at a very young age, so your puppy is familiar with its purpose. (I do not recommend disposable paper pads as they are pricey and the puppies are always tearing them apart & eating them, although they will work short term.) Continuing with their pad training is highly recommended. I prefer either quilted flat crib sheets or even better are the pads sold online at ezwhelp.com. They work great as potty pads and are washable, affordable and reusable.

Have fun with your new puppy, and please contact me if you have any questions! Thank you so much,

Tina Young
