ESA District School Nurse

Purpose

The district school nurse provides and oversees the district’s comprehensive program of school health services including assessment, screening, consultation, direct intervention and referral to protect, improve, and maintain student health and wellness, and to enhance student potential to benefit from educational experiences.

Reports to: Superintendent and Building Principals

Essential Functions

· Provides a comprehensive program of school nursing services including
assessment, health screening, direct and consultative services, management of
immunization and communicable disease control responsibilities and referral
activities related to student health and wellness.

· Provides leadership and oversight for services provided by school staff.

· Coordinates district response to potential health crises.

· Consults with parents at school or by home visit regarding student health and
wellness needs.

· Consults with staff regarding student health and wellness needs including student
placements/ participation in special programs.

· Assists in creation and revision of board policies related to nursing services.

· Participates in Section 504 team evaluations and planning for students with significant health problems.

· Provides direct student services including guidance, health/wellness counseling and
crisis intervention.

· Initiate necessary adjustments in physical education and/or other school programs
(including facilitation of home/hospital instructional services) for students with
significant health problems.

· Serves as a health/wellness education resource person to staff, students and
parents. Assists with health curriculum development and instruction.

· Serves as a liaison between the school and outside medical and community service
providers.

· Provides support training and intervention in such crisis areas as child abuse,
drug/alcohol problems and STD.

· Assists with intervention regarding selected student attendance problems.

· Provides emergency nursing services for ill or injured persons at school.

· Provides first aid or other necessary training regarding student health needs to
school staff members.

· Cooperates with community groups in other health programs.

· Assists in identification of safety and health hazards on school sites.

· Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Requirements: -Minimum Qualifications

Skills: This position requires an ability to work closely with parents, teachers, school administrators, other staff, and outside health care professionals to address health care concerns. Excellent problem solving, planning, and communication skills are essential as are other skills commonly associated with school and public health services.

Knowledge: This position requires subject matter expertise commonly associated with school and public health services, including a knowledge of state rules, regulations, and policy guidance governing the provision of health care services to students in a school setting. An extensive knowledge of community health care resources is essential.

Ability: This position requires the ability to assess and respond to student health care concerns, work closely in a team setting to solve problems, and supervise and motivate others. Strong oral and written communication abilities are essential as are other abilities commonly associated with school and public health services.

Working Environment: Responsible and directly related nursing and health provider experience is required to perform problem analysis using widely prescribed and used principles and concepts. The position classification performs decision analysis and makes decisions of considerable consequence, requiring the application and interpretation of data, facts, procedures, and policies. The School Nurse will meet frequently with school administrators, teachers, internal staff, and members of the community to communicate information, data, and alternative problem solutions. This position classification involves work that requires sitting a portion of the time; walking; and standing for extended periods. This position requires accurate perception of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, handling and working with educational learning aids, materials and objects, and providing oral and written information. Experience/Training: This job requires a minimum of five years successful experience providing and coordinating nursing services in a public school/and or clinical setting.

Education: B.S. in Nursing (either earned or in process)

Certification: ESA School Nurse or Conditional ESA School Nurse required or willing to pursue upon employment.

Terms of Employment: 1.0 FTE for the 2015-16 school year.

Evaluation: Position to be evaluated annually in accordance with the EEA collective bargaining agreement.
