Scientist Research Project

Introduction: You will work individually on a research project centered on the life of your assigned scientist.

A. You will research your famous scientist and record information related to the following points:

1. Years living ( 1958-2013)

2. What was their family like? (Siblings, large or small family, etc.)

3. Where and when did they attend school?

4. What was their field of study? ( biology, chemistry, etc)

5. Where they did/do their work.

6. What are they most famous for discovering? Explain in detail and in your own words

7. Any interesting facts about the person’s life (hobbies, interests, awards)?

8. Did they work with or were friends with any other famous scientists of their time?

9. In at least two sentences, how has their accomplishment benefitted the world?

B. You will type up research answer sheet using numbered statements that answer the questions above. You will include a bibliography at the bottom of that sheet that includes your three sources (properly cited).

C. You will use the information you have researched to create one of the following projects.

A. Time capsule- Time capsules often contain pictures and artifacts, such as clothing, jewelry, coins, maps, and music. They also tend to include letters and written statements. Your time capsule should include the following:

1. A picture of the scientist on the lid of the shoebox with their full name.

2. Your shoebox should be decorated on all sides using construction paper or other resources available to you. The decorations should center on your scientist, their interests, or the time period in which they lived.

3. Be creative with your “time capsule.” Inside it should include pictures that relate to your scientist or what was going on culturally or economically during the time period in which they lived. You can use objects that you think relate or pictures. You should have at least 6 items on the inside as well as decorate the inside of your time capsule.

4. On the inside of the lid you should create a list of the items you included and how they relate to your scientist’s life, their interest, or their culture. You should make sure you include items that have to do with their most famous discovery or invention.

B. Collage

1. Your collage should fill at least an 11 X 17 sheet of construction paper or poster paper.

2. You will divide the collage in half. One the left should be pictures related to the scientist’s life and the time period in which they lived. On the right you should include collage items that are reflective of your life, culture, background, and time period in which you live.

3. Pictures included in the collage can be printed from the computer, taken from magazines, or hand drawn.

4. You should have at least 10 items on each side of the collage.

5. You will number the items included and on the back of you poster or construction paper should be a numbered list. This list will explain what the image is and why the image was included.

C. “Fakebook” profile

1. You will use the online website “sciencetools.net” to create a “Fakebook” profile for your scientist.

2. When you log onto the website there is a brief tutorial video.

3. You will choose a picture of the scientist from Google images or other websites and use that as their profile picture.

4. You will have to choose friends for them. You will do this by finding other famous people or scientists that lived in the same time period as them. They should have at least 10 friends.

5. You must include 20 “posts” that are at least two sentences in length. They should be reflective of the scientist’s life.

6. You have to first create a password for your “Fakebook.” Once you save your profile for the first time a link should pop up. You have to save that link in a word document to access your profile each day and edit it.

7. The next time you want to go online and edit your “Fakebook” you will need to copy and paste the link into Google.

8. When you have completed your “Fakebook” you will print it and turn it in.
