APPLING COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL

School Parental Involvement Policy

2009 – 2010

(Revised December 1, 2008)

The Appling County Middle School (ACMS) recognizes the impact of forming strong relationships among the school, family, and community. The following policy or plan has been developed to reiterate the Appling County Middle School’s commitment to enhance the existing relationships. Members of the school, community, and parents were involved in the development of the Parental Involvement Policy.

Based on the needs identified by parent and staff surveys conducted at the end of last year, the following strategies were outlined:

v  Parental Involvement Policy

Ø  The compact is distributed to parents and students at the beginning of school year or as new students are enrolled.

Ø  Spanish interpretation is made available.

Ø  All students receive a student information packet which includes the code of conduct, procedures, and school calendar.

v  School – Parent Compact

Ø  The compact is developed by parent, teacher, service, and administrative representatives.

Ø  English and Spanish versions are made available.

Ø  The school’s compact is included in the front of the student planner/packet at the beginning of each school year.

v  Information about school policies and involvement opportunities are communicated through direct parent contact by the following:

Ø  Committees such as School Council, SACS CASI Leadership Team, and Parental Involvement

Ø  School Counselors

Ø  Administrators

Ø  and School and Community Publicity

v  Annual and regular meetings of parents will be convened to discuss the school-wide program, including their rights to be involved in the school plan.

Ø  All parents are invited to attend parent meetings and are given copies of the school plan.

Ø  Parents and community members are asked to serve on committees such as the School Council, SACS CASI Committee, and the Parental Involvement Committee each year.

Ø  Parent meetings are held during the school day and outside school hours based on the annual parent surveys and convenience of all stakeholders involved.

v  Parents will be provided information on the school curriculum, school performance, and individual student assessments.

Ø  Information on school performance is presented annually, sent home on brochures or handouts, and made available in the school’s central office.

Ø  The results of norm-referenced and standardized tests are sent home with students who have participated in these tests.

Ø  Information about the school curriculum is conveyed to parents through parent/teacher conferences, letters to parents, parent sessions or meetings, and school Web site.

v  Parents and community members will be given timely responses to their concerns and suggestions.

Ø  All concerns and suggestions are submitted in written form and responded to in a timely manner to the extent possible. Information from the annual parent surveys are considered when developing a plan for the upcoming year.

v  The school will enhance relationships with all stakeholders through various activities, events, strategies, parent sessions, and/or committees.

Ø  REFER TO THE ATTACHED PLAN.
