School Advisory Council Minutes

September 19, 2013

I.  The meeting started at 2:24 PM.

II.  Mrs. O’Neill and Mrs. Garcia, SAC Co-Chairs, welcomed all parents and faculty members to the meeting. A review of the 2013-2014 SAC member list was conducted by Mrs. O’Neill.

  1. Ms. Blackmon (teacher at Stirling Elementary) is a tentative member.
  2. Ms. Fernandez motioned to remove Mrs. Howitt as a parent representative, and Mrs. Harrow seconded the motion.
  3. Mr. Fernandez motioned to add Olivia Kasner as a parent representative, and Mrs. Frazier seconded the motion.
  4. Mrs. Heim motioned to add Mrs. Uden (teacher at Stirling Elementary), and Mrs. Pearl seconded the motion.

III.  Mrs. Garcia presented the May 2013 SAC minutes for review and approval. Ms. Pearl motioned to accept the minutes as written, and Mr. Zein seconded the motion.

IV.  Mrs. O’Neill presented the School Improvement Plan (SIP) template for review.

  1. The working document presented shows the current progress of the SIP plan, which was created in August 2013.
  2. The SIP will be reviewed and available for amendment by SAC after October.
  3. Barriers and ideas for how to overcome these barriers were discussed.
  4. Ms. Pearl discussed additional monthly 90-minute math planning period for classroom teachers.

V.  Ms. Valliere presented Title I information.

  1. The Parent Involvement Plan (PIP)
  2. Revisions were made at the May 2013 SAC meeting.
  3. 2013-2014 PIP may be found on the Title I bulletin board in the front office.
  4. School-Parent Compact
  5. 2013-2014 document was sent home during the first week of school
  6. A copy of the school-parent compact may be found on the Title I bulletin board in the front office.
  7. Title I Parent Trainings
  8. Parents were encouraged to register as participants in the Title I Parent Training Academy Workshops
  9. Parents were provided with a flyer for the Parent Orientation training on September 26, 2013 at Dillard High School
  10. Parents were encouraged to attend the Parent Literacy Night at Stirling Elementary on October 16, 2013.
  11. Third Grade parents were encouraged to attend the Third Grade Coffee and Conversation on October 2, 2013 in the Stirling Cafeteria.

VI.  Administrative Update

  1. Mr. Dobronz, Principal, presented.
  2. Information discussed at the Principal’s Meeting this morning.
  3. The county would like to see an increase of parental involvement in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings.
  4. Mr. Dobronz was presented at the Principal’s Meeting with a plaque for winning the “Coin War” – Stirling Elementary raised the most coins for the American Cancer Society – Relay for Life.
  5. School related information
  6. Our current enrollment is up from 611 to 675.
  7. This provides an increase of $191,568 to our budget.
  8. A new kindergarten teacher and third grade teacher were recently added to the staff.
  9. Ms. Colombo, guidance counselor, was increased to a full-time position.
  10. Stacy Harrow, budget keeper, was increased to a full-time position.
  11. Leslie Romero, office clerk, was hired part-time.
  12. New Staff members: Ms. Osorio, kindergarten. Ms. M. Ganz, third grade.
  13. Transfers among staff: Ms. Silvey was moved from second grade into the Intellectual Disabilities Cluster. Mrs. Kalinoski was moved from the Intellectual Disabilities Cluster to kindergarten.
  14. BAT testing will be conducted in grades 3-5 next week.
  15. Stirling Elementary hosted 35 teacher leaders from the Silver Schools in Cadre 4, on September 17.
  16. These teachers reviewed Common Core Math, Literacy, and PARCC indicators.

VII.  Mrs. Harrow made the motion to adjourn the meeting at 3:05 PM. Mr. Zein seconded the motion.

VIII.  The next SAC meeting will take place October 17, 2013.
