The North Star Chapter gathers annually to allow itself to be somewhat pampered and to enjoy a catered dinner. It is a time when we can relax a bit and not get caught up in the bustle of a food fest such as the Weihnachtsfest. It is an occasion where we need not worry whether the homemade Bierocks and Haluptsi are hot enough or reflect well on our culinary talents. It is a time to catch up with what goes on in the lives of our chapter brethren.
It can also be a time to celebrate and to reflect on our achievements, and the chapter’s whopping successful “Sei Unser Gast”, our own “Little Cookbook That Could”, fits that bill. Without a doubt this book with its record sales of over 6,000 volumes throughout the country has contributed to a renewed interest in German-Russian cuisine. It has launched a new era of pride in our ancestral foodways.
The chapter couldn’t find a more fitting way to recognize our little book and to honor our foodways heritage than to arrange a showing of the newly released video documentary “Schmeckfest: Food Traditions of the Germans from Russia.” The one-hour film produced by Prairie Public Television and North Dakota State University Libraries focuses on foods as folk survivals. Filming was done in several kitchens of our GR cousins, including the homes of Carol Halverson, Jackie Dohn Maas, and Sam Brungardt.
Join the chapter in a social hour, followed by dinner, and cap off the evening by enjoying the filmed culinary memories which can feed your soul and warm the heart.
