SAT Vocabulary: Week 1
- sycophant (n): one who is eager to please for personal gain; or more informally, a suck-up or brown-noser
- Jillian is such a sycophant; she is always telling the teacher how great he is just so she can get a better grade, and then she goes home and insults him behind his back!
- lugubrious (adj.): extremely sad, gloomy, or mournful
- After the car hit my puppy, I felt lugubrious for days until he was fully healed; I never thought I could feel so depressed!
- pernicious (adj): causing great harm & destruction, wicked
- I hate that vile girl; her pernicious rumors destroyed my reputation!
- insouciant (adj): unconcerned or unworried, often to the point of arrogance
- That insouciant boy walks around like nothing ever bothers him; this cavalier confidence may be attractive to some girls, but I hate that kind of cockiness.
- ubiquitous (adj): present everywhere at once, omnipresent
- Starbucks are so ubiquitous; I see one around every corner and on every street!
