SAT Vocabulary: Week 1

  1. sycophant (n): one who is eager to please for personal gain; or more informally, a suck-up or brown-noser
  2. Jillian is such a sycophant; she is always telling the teacher how great he is just so she can get a better grade, and then she goes home and insults him behind his back!
  3. lugubrious (adj.): extremely sad, gloomy, or mournful
  4. After the car hit my puppy, I felt lugubrious for days until he was fully healed; I never thought I could feel so depressed!
  5. pernicious (adj): causing great harm & destruction, wicked
  6. I hate that vile girl; her pernicious rumors destroyed my reputation!
  7. insouciant (adj): unconcerned or unworried, often to the point of arrogance
  8. That insouciant boy walks around like nothing ever bothers him; this cavalier confidence may be attractive to some girls, but I hate that kind of cockiness.
  9. ubiquitous (adj): present everywhere at once, omnipresent
  10. Starbucks are so ubiquitous; I see one around every corner and on every street!
