Sasha returned home looking very sad. Luba
could see it had been another hard day for him.
“It is not easy,” Sasha said in Russian. He sighed.
“It is not easy to find a job in San Francisco when
you speak little English.”
Luba placed a bowl of fruit on the kitchen table.
“I know, dear,” she said. Just keep on looking. You
will find work soon. I am sure of that. Then all will
be fine.”
Katy, their daughter, came into the room. She
took a pear and handed it to her father.
“Here, Poppa, eat this,” she said. “You’ll feel
better!”
Sasha hugged his daughter and studied the
fruit. “What do you call this in English?” he asked.
“Pear,” Katy said. “It is a pear.”
Sasha looked puzzled. “I thought a pear was
two of the same thing, like a pair of socks.”
“That’s a different word!” Katy laughed. “It
sounds the same, but it’s not the same word.”
Sasha shook his head. “English words
Overwhelm me,” he said in Russian. “Two words,
but only one sound! Which word is which? How
will I ever learn English?”
