3) to relay important details relating to release date, actors, and age suitability (rating, PG 14A, R)

METHODS OF DEVELOPING MEANING – Visual Elements and Conventions

1) Use of VISUAL ELEMENTS:

- IMAGES: what values, beliefs, concepts, ideas are being emphasized by these visual choices?

- LOOK & CONTENT: lettering/font/information – how does the design enhance the message?

- LIGHT – CONTRAST – COLOUR – how is the colour and use of contrast organized on the poster?

- PROPORTION:

- COMPOSITION- an enticing layout that creates a 'movie-at-a-glance' image – combination of all visual elements

these VISUAL ELEMENTS also PROVIDE INFORMATION about the THEMATIC ISSUES and the GENRE

Successful film posters follow certain CONVENTIONS in order to appeal to audiences:

- POINT OF FOCUS: Image of star OR an iconic image from the film

- Main actor(s) name

- Background images

- Title of film

- Tag line (line from script, or other caption)

- Billing block (now playing, coming soon, etc)
