April 22nd Kickers Match to benefit Jamie Hess Pediatric Bone Marrow Foundation- Will you help?

Many of us in the soccer world have experienced the painful path of someone with Leukemia or in need of a bone marrow transplant. Jamie was a delightful, loving, motivated, local youth who died after having two bone marrow transplants. Jamie was and continues to be supported by the Kickers. We encourage our youth soccer community to get involved in several ways:

Why kids play soccer?

Kids are not mini adults. They want to play soccer for very different reasons from adults. Winning may well be a focus for adult players, but it is not for kids. Parents should understand what motivates kids to play soccer. These motivations include:

• For fun
• To be with friends
• To practice skills and get better
• To run around

The 1 v. 1 Battle
The teams winning these battles usually end up winning the match

Boiled down to its pure essence, soccer can be distilled into a series of small battles between one offensive player and one defensive player. The team that wins the majority of these small battles usually ends up winning the entire match. Therefore, it is impossible to talk about 1 v 1 play without talking about both sides. Go to:

Parent Education

What games or drills should I do with my child outside of practice?

The most effective drills, especially for young players, are those that a child will pay attention to and want to participate in for at least 20 minutes. Good ideas include drills that will reinforce the two most basic and important ball-handling elements: dribbling (individual ball control) and passing.

Which television/cable channels carry MLS and national team games?

Live coverage of soccer games in the United States has increased dramatically in the past few years, and with the number of games increasing so do the number of channels. US Soccer works very hard to get the games to the fans whether it’s on broadcast TV, cable, or pay-per-view. Here are some tips on where to find those games.
