I. JOB SUMMARY

The MRI/CT Technologist is responsible for performing Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computed Tomography exams to aid physicians in the diagnosis of disease. This position is responsible for performing a variety of MRI/CT applying prescribed ionizing radiation using the ALARA principle for CT’s, to assist in the proper radiologic diagnosis. Also, be able to critique images, transport patients, clean equipment and perform related clerical duties as required.

II. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

A.  Clinical Practice

  1. Collect key information from the patient, family, doctor, and nurses that are specific to the exam being performed in order to assist the Radiologist in the proper diagnosis.
  2. Educate each imaging patient, family or physician as to the extent and detail of each procedure, including informed consent as well as pre-and post-procedure instructions.
  3. Ensure each patient has been properly prepared for each procedure.
  4. Adhere to department and institution policies, procedures and regulations.
  5. Understand the importance of NCMC’s Compliance policy and ensures the correct exam is being administered to the correct patient. Consults with Radiologist as needed.
  6. Perform post scanning duties including: archiving, post processing procedures, and ensuring each exam is delivered to the appropriate Radiologist for reading and dictation.
  7. Coordinate the daily schedule to accommodate add-ons and the need for other tests that may be requested.
  8. Consult with Radiologist

9.  Perform a variety of MRI/CT procedures as defined by the Radiologist.

  1. Provide patient care and physician assistance during the course of the procedure.
  2. Ensure completeness of patient exam prior to Radiologist interpretation.

12.  Assist Director in review and refinement of MRI/CT procedures and protocols.

  1. Maintain proper inventory levels of all supplies as required; maintain crash cart daily: all supplies must be properly stocked, all drugs verified for expiration dates and life pack checked daily for proper functioning.

14.  Assist in training with new employees and students.

15.  Provide staff and patient protection in accordance with prescribed radiation safety standards.

  1. Complete MRI/CT paperwork in a timely manner and enter correct exam charges into the Radiology system.
  2. Serve as a role model and mentor to peers, and students.
  3. Perform other duties as assigned.

B. Professional Communication

  1. Maintain confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family.
  2. Interact with patients/families, with a variety of developmental and sociocultural backgrounds.
  3. Provide information to patients and families to reduce anxiety and convey an attitude of acceptance, sensitivity, and caring.
  4. Maintain professional relationships and convey relevant information to other members of the health care team within facility and any applicable referral agencies.
  5. Initiate communication with peers about clinical priorities for care.
  6. Relay information appropriately over telephone, pagers, and other communication devices.

C. Teamwork

  1. Accept assignments based on patient census, acuity, needs, and the qualifications and competencies of self and of other staff members.
  2. Work closely with other customers, co-workers and patients to ensure the department achieves clinically diagnostic exams.
  3. Delegate work to other staff members as needed.
  4. Report on patients history to those who require information, including co-workers, physicians, and radiologists and other staff.
  5. Initiate problem solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with peers.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to work with a diversity of personalities.
  7. Report on P.I. issues to those who require information, including coordinators and other staff.

D. Professional Development

  1. Attend staff meetings, in-services, and continuing education.
  2. Contribute to PI monitors
  3. Contribute to annual reviews of peer performance as requested by the director.
  4. Assist in the development of indicators, thresholds, study methods, and data collection as assigned.
  5. Respond to problems/opportunities to improve care/customer service.
  6. Support involvement in the hospital's Performance Improvement initiative.
  7. Participate in and maintain competencies required for the position and specific unit/area(s) of assignment.

III. JOB REQUIREMENTS

1.  Graduation from a School of Radiologic Science with current ARRT and MRI certification.

2.  One to Two years prior experience in Magnetic Resonance Imaging

3.  Must maintain certification with ARRT by obtaining 24 CEUs in a 2 year period.

4.  Ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain competency as required for job title and the unit/area(s) of assignment.

5.  Excellent communication skills to include oral and written comprehension/expression.

6.  Ability and willingness to work with patients’ growth and development needs particularly related to the age of patients in the unit/area(s) of assignment.

7.  Ability to manage a chaotic work environment related to changing patient needs, including work with patients with acute, chronic, and complex disease processes, and those who are dying.

8.  Ability and willingness to exhibit behaviors consistent with standards for performance improvement and organizational values (e.g., efficiency & financial responsibility, safety, partnership & service, teamwork, compassion, integrity, and trust & respect).

9.  Ability and willingness to exhibit behaviors consistent with principles for service excellence.

10.  Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to perform and assist the Radiologist with various diagnostic interventional, invasive or surgery procedure as well as various film library functions.

11.  Be able to utilize information provided in each departmental manual.

12.  Possess the knowledge of exam preparations required for the correct administration of oral and IV contrast prior to the MRI/CT procedure.

13.  Demonstrate the knowledge of various software programs within the department.
