Recipe for Oobleck:

Class of 25 students:

Oobleck—1/2 quart of water

2 boxes of starch

Food coloring (green)

Put the water and food coloring in a large bowl and begin adding cornstarch and mixing. Eventually the mixture will get thicker; keep adding and stirring. You will know when you have Oobleck.

Glurch (Silly Putty)------- Water

White glue

Sodium borate (laundry soap, powder)

Food coloring

There are actually two solutions for Glurch. The first is 50% water, 50% white glue and food coloring (any color you like). The second is a solution of sodium borate. And warm water. I usually pour a couple of tablespoons in a half-quart and shake. Give the students equal volumes of the two solutions to mix.

Add one cup of glue and one cup of water to one of the jars.

Tightly secure the lid to the jar and shake until glue is fully diluted, and no gooey clumps remain. Label this jar; Solution #1 50% glue. Next, make the solution #2, the Borax solution, which is made of about 3 tsp Borax to 1 cup of warm water. Tightly secure the lid to the jar and shake until no particles of Borax remain, and the solution is clear. Label the jar, solution # 2. Now let the students begin to combine the two solutions.
