Sight recognition of word endings: ed, s, ‘s, ing, er, est.
Decodes multi-syllabic words
Decodes contractions / Uses vocabulary associated with text features: glossary, print variations, headings, ect and text genre.
Uses vocabulary associated with: narrative, expository, persuasive, informational, and entertaining text.
Oral vocabulary includes: multiple meaning words, antonyms, synonyms, homonyms and analogies.
Understands the meaning of simple metaphors, similes and proverbs.
Can express how two “examples” are similar and different.
Uses correct verb tense, secondary verb forms: infinitive (to go) participle (boy running) and gerund (walking in the park.
Uses conjunctions: than, unless, until, although, however, as, while and whether.
Uses noun and verb clauses
Uses contractions: can’t, won’t, shouldn’t, couldn’t / Uses text features and prior knowledge to make predictions about text content
Identifies author’s purpose
Can determine the essential message, connect important details with ideas, makes inferences, and identifies chronological order in text.
Distinguishes between informational, persuasive and entertaining text.
Distinguishes between factual vs. fictional text.
Aware of text organization to include: sequence of events, cause effect and compare and contrast.
Can understand a variety references build vocabulary and provide information. These include: books, maps, diagrams and graphs / 100-125 WPM
Reads with inflection and emphasis. / Establishes purpose then uses outline for writing.
Writes a 2 paragraph essay around a central idea, with topic sentence, 3 supportive details and closing statement.
Uses story grammar to organize written narrative text.
Writes a friendly letter.
Uses basic punctuation and capitalization.
Uses knowledge of root words and prefix and suffixes to assist in spelling.
