Memorial High School
In this WebQuest a group of students is asked to design a proposal for their senior trip. The proposal will be presented to the school board for approval. The proposal for the trip must include a detailed itinerary and budget. This budget will include expenses related to travel, hotel, meals, and activities.
Introduction
At the beginning of this year the junior class found out the senior trip which had always been to Disney World was now going to be to Washington D.C. The school board reasoned that they wanted the trip to be an educational. Many of you were furious with change and fought to have the trip changed back to Disney World. The school board agreed to allow the class to travel to Disney World however; you have been asked to put the details and expenses of the trip into a proposal to be presented to and approved by the school board. Your team has been chosen to create the proposal which will include an itinerary, budget, and description of the trip.
Proposal For Your Senior Trip
Task
The school has granted you permission to take your Senior Trip. The trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida will take place May 18th – May 22nd. Now you must put together the details of your trip. Your class advisor has determined the cost per student cannot exceed $1500.
You will be placed in groups of three. Each of you will have an individual task to complete. Upon completion of those tasks, you will all come together with your information and perform a final group task.
First you will need to decide between the three of you who will take on the following roles:
Travel Agent - This person is in charge of gathering flight information and prices.
Accommodations specialist - This person will locate a hotel and calculate price information per student.
Activity Director - This person will choose which theme parks students will visit, the package price, and cost per student that will be suitable.
Important!
Remember that the price per person cannot exceed $1500. This means you must work closely with the members of your group to make sure this doesn’t happen.

Group Task
As a group you will layout the itinerary and budget for your Senior Trip to be presented to the school board for their approval and to be presented to the parents at the next trip meeting.
This Group Task has 3 parts
Part I - Costs
On one page each of the major aspects (airline, hotel, and theme park package) should be presented with a brief description of each which includes total individual cost. You may design this any way you wish.
Secondly, you will decide how meals will be consumed each day (individually or as a group). You will create a separate budget for meals. Locate menus from restaurants or fast food establishments located on the Disney properties. (If you are unable to locate certain menus, with the permission of your instructor, you may choose to calculate $8.00 for that meal. If you decide students will eat as a group in a restaurant, calculate $12.00 for that meal). Be sure to include tips. It is customary to tip 15 – 20% of the total meal cost. You must come up with a meal budget that specifies breakfast, lunch, and dinner for each day.
Upon completing the costs for airfare, hotel, theme park tickets, and meals, you will figure out a subtotal. Then, calculate 18% of the subtotal and state this as a Taxes and Fees Cost in your proposal. Add the subtotal and taxes and fees to finally come up with a Total Cost.
Record all expenses in an Excel worksheet with appropriate column headings, formatting, and use of formulas. Create an embedded chart showing all trip expenses excluding totals in each category.
Part II - Itinerary
Next, there should be a page that states the detailed itinerary for each day of the trip. This itinerary will include flight departure and arrival information, activities for the day and meal times (if scheduled). The group should prepare this itinerary using one of the itinerary templates available in Office 2007. You can use the template below to gather your information.
Part III - Summary
In addition to this two page report, each of you will write a one page synopsis that will discuss what your task was, and what skills, Web sites, and software programs you used in this project. Did you find these sites easy to navigate for your specific task? Was it difficult to stay within the $1500 budget? Discuss the difficulty you would have had doing this project had you not used technology (specifically the Internet). Did each participant fulfill his/her responsibilities? What, if anything, would you change about this project?
Templates
The worksheet below will allow you to organize your information as you gather it. You may design this template layout any way you wish. Once you have chosen an appropriate flight, hotel, and theme park package to fit your budget, you will summarize this information on one page. A template for your proposal is also provided however, you may design this layout any way you wish.

Once it is approved by the school board we will distribute the information to each parent at the senior trip meeting.
