Advanced Project WILD

Coastal Sandhills Workshop (CSW)

Do you like the Coastal Plains? Do you like the Sandhills? How about Gopher Tortoises and Indigo Snakes? Want to get paid to learn about them?

Please apply to attend these two workshops.

Educational participants will learn from GA DNR Botanists, Ornithologists, Biologists and Ecologists. Topics will include several rare or endangered species, such as the Gopher Tortoise, Eastern Indigo Snake, Red-cockaded woodpecker and other species. Other topics will feature plants that define the sandhills habitat and conservation measures of this rare and special area. In order to be accepted into this workshop, receive the $200 stipend and 4 PLU credits, teachers must help translate technical information into fact sheets, lesson plans and resources that will become educational programs and materials targeted for K-12 students, educators and the public. These resources will help teach them the importance of these habitats, their ecological functions and ways they can be conserved and managed.

Participants must be able to attend both sessions. This two-phase project, sponsored by a grant from The Wal-Mart Foundation, will serve as a pilot project. Information gathered during the State Wildlife Action Plan and the abstracts created will be used to develop outreach and education materials about species and habitats in the Coastal Plain. The first workshop will be used to engage educators to translate the technical information into curriculum components that are grade–appropriate for use in public and private school. During the second workshop, teachers will create the lesson plans, fact sheets and graphics.
