I. The Program Profile

A. The Purpose

The Fine Arts Unit provides students with a diverse selection of quality courses in the fine arts. These courses are designed to help students develop a broader understanding of the influence of art upon society, to enhance their humanity through participation in creative endeavor, and to cultivate the ability for critical thinking and appreciation of the arts.

The Fine Arts curriculum is designed to:

1.prepare students for success in fine art courses so that they may transfer into upper level courses at 4 year colleges and universities

2. provide instruction in fine art so that students may successfully apply skills in ceramics, photography, drawing, 2D design, 3D design, painting, art history and critical thinking to professional work

3. provide an opportunity to prepare a portfolio for admission to a 4 year degree program in visual art

Unit Goals and Objectives:

1. Fine Arts students will gain knowledge of various media and techniques, which will enable them to participate in a wide range of creative pursuits

2. Fine Arts Students will be able to engage in scholarly enquiry and critical analysis of contemporary and historical achievements in the fine arts.

3. Fine Arts students will gain a new appreciation for and understanding of the impact of the Arts upon society.

These goals and objectives support the mission of the college to provide students with a relevant, high quality education.

The Fine Arts program at FKCC is unique in that it serves a culturally oriented community that is home to many fine artists practicing in a variety of visual arts disciplines. Many in the arts community take courses within the fine arts program to satisfy personal goals and for cultural enrichment. The ceramics department has been successful in attracting enrichment students by designing workshops and inviting visiting artists to meet the demand for intensive visual arts instruction. With two new faculty on board in art and photography there will be similar experiences designed to attract more artists to those areas. Guest lectures have already been included in FKCC arts classrooms so that experts in the community have the opportunity to engage with the FKCC arts curriculum and share their particular knowledge. The Fine Arts faculty in turn shares their knowledge and talent in public lectures and presentations as well as actively exhibiting creative work in community galleries and exhibition spaces. One immediate goal of the Fine Arts program is to open up more dialog between the arts community in Key West and the learning community at FKCC.

C.  The Students

The Fine Arts unit serves a wide variety of students at FKCC as stated earlier. Many of these students are considered ‘non-traditional’ in that they are older than the average college student and they don’t necessarily desire an A.A. degree. The following data table indicates that the majority of fine arts students are enrolled part-time
