Position Title: Assistant Dean of Students for Diversity and Inclusion

Schedule: Regular, Full time with some evenings and weekends as needed

STATEMENT OF THE JOB:
The University of Southern Maine is seeking an individual to fill the role of Assistant Dean of Students for Diversity and Inclusion. The primary purpose of this position is to provide leadership for campus-wide strategic diversity and inclusive excellence initiatives.
The Assistant Dean of Students for Diversity and Inclusion (ADSDI) facilitates and supports the implementation of inclusive excellence, working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students and in partnership with departments and programs on campus. The ADSDI advances the institutions commitment to fostering and supporting a community of students, faculty and staff that is welcoming of diversity in race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, socioeconomic status, religion, ability, age, national origin, and other categories of identity. The ADSDI will collaborate across the institution to provide educational opportunities, programs, and services that are multicultural in content and expressive of diverse life experiences and worldviews.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Provide leadership to advance a welcoming climate for all members of the USM community while developing an appreciation, common purpose and sustaining environment for diversity and inclusive excellence at the University in alignment with the mission and strategic plan.
Serve as an effective spokesperson on issues related to diversity and inclusive excellence, providing support, advocacy and leadership development/recognition for underrepresented groups on campus, including racial and ethnic minorities and students, faculty and staff.
Direct and manage the multicultural students affairs office included the direct supervision of the coordinators of multicultural student affairs.
Collaborate with several departments across the University to strengthen recruitment and retention of diverse students, faculty and staff.
Provide direction, informational resources, and support to academic departments and Campus Life departments to develop curricular and co-curricular initiatives to advance the Institutional Learning Goals related to diversity and inclusive excellence.
Provide direction, informational resources and support to Human Resources, Academic Affairs, and other divisions to advance professional development programs related to diversity and inclusive excellence, and facilitate training programs as appropriate.
Establish effective connections with appropriate external agencies and other resource groups including diverse alumni constituents, parents, and community organizations.
Provide regular communication to senior leadership on national trends, campus climate, and outcomes related to related to diversity and inclusive excellence, and advice senior leadership on institutional policies and protocol.
SPECIAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES*:
Direct responsibility for safety and security of employees, students, minors, and/or visitors or property.
Ability to drive a University vehicle and provide proof of a valid driver’s license.
Ability to drive colleagues, students or others and provide proof of a valid driver’s license.
Ability to provide own transportation (fully-insured vehicle), provide proof of a valid driver’s license, and compliance with Maine law regarding vehicle insurance.
Work on federally funded projects.
Additional duties as reasonably assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises, direct and manages 1-4 professional staff and students including multicultural student affairs staff
BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for the overall management of the multicultural student affairs budget.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Comprehensive knowledge of effective personnel management practices and supervisory skills, including motivation, training, professional development, conflict resolution, and progressive discipline, with the demonstrated ability to effectively model appropriate professional behavior.
Excellent customer service experience, including ability to represent the university and its interests in a professional and conscientious manner. Demonstrated ability to maintain high quality/standards of work, leadership, ethics, commitment, and professional responsibility and judgment.

Experience gathering data and communicating trends to a variety of constituents. Experience identifying areas of improvement based on evidence.
Excellent computer skills and proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
Master's degree in a related field, such as Ethnic/Gender Studies, Multicultural Education, Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel, Counseling, or Social Work, or an academic field with a demonstrated emphasis on diversity initiatives, inclusion, or multicultural studies; plus five years of experience providing campus or community programs and services for diverse populations; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
