Exploring Carr Gate

On Saturday 9th May Calderdale Police Explorers visited West Yorkshire Polices’ outstanding Carr Gate Complex as part of their program.

The Carr Gate complex houses Firearms, Driver, Public Order, Crime, IT, Foundation and Leadership and Development training. Facilities at Carr Gate include state of the art firearms ranges, indoor and outdoor public order areas, a firearms skills house, driver manoeuvring area, classrooms, gym, a canteen and much more.

The Explorers were shown the indoor and outdoor public arenas where they were taught how to search vehicles and premises for concealed items. They learnt how difficult it was to find items hidden and to what extent people will go to hide objects.

They also saw the Force helicopter and horses from the mounted section. PC Alex Langley who manages the Volunteers and Specials said “The Explorers are really getting a good taste of what West Yorkshire Police is all about through inputs on the course. Many have enjoyed it so much that they have expressed an interest to continue working with the Police by applying to become Volunteers or Specials when the program ends.”

Salterhebble - Crime Prevention workshop

PC Cath Hardwick and PCSO Daniel Lortie arranged for Rebecca Finch from Trading Standards to attend at the recent coffee morning at All Saints Parish Hall to speak about Bogus Callers. She spoke to everybody about crime prevention and provided pertinent information in an entertaining manner.

Take Care Of Our Moorland -message from Calderdale Wildlife Officer PC Fiona Igo

The Police and Natural England would like to make local residents aware of the moorland around us in Calderdale and Kirklees. We would like to make sure that our lovely moors do not suffer from accidental or deliberate fires, which is particularly important in the coming months. Much of the moorland in Calderdale and Kirklees is SSSI (site of Special Scientific Interest) or SPA (Special Protection Area). The moorland close to the residents of Calderdale regularly suffers moorland fires. Many of you will remember the awful fires of PREVIOUS YEARS These fires are set deliberately or are caused by carelessness. The fires are not caused by “farmers burning the grass on the moors”.

If over the next few months, you happen to SEE a moorland fire, please dial 999 and ask for fire. Please do not assume that someone else will have rung the fire service already, because others may be thinking the same thing!

These wide open moorland habitats on our doorstep are important for many reasons, the breeding birds they support, as well as the semi-natural habitats which exist on them. The blanket bog habitats are of particular interest, as globally they are a very scarce habitat and Britain processes a high percentage of their international coverage. The moorlands are not just important for their wild life, they are extremely important for the carbon which they contain and remove from the atmosphere and the majority of the countries drinking water comes from the uplands.

Healthy moorland can support a longer season of grazing for stock and a much wider variety of bird and plant species. Much of our moorland is now grass, due to the fires of the past. Burning grass moorland only produces more grass, which provides only short term grazing of 3 to 4 months. Some areas of heather moor are burnt to diversify the structure of heather for birds; this is a completely different practice and only takes place outside the bird breeding season – before the 15th of April. The majority of our grass moor fires are later than this and destroy the nests of many bird species. In the South Pennines there should no intentional burning of grass moors. No permissions are in place with Natural England for this to take place on the designated moorland.

To help the moorlands recover, Natural England is working in partnership with bodies such as Yorkshire Water and Moors for the Future to restore these degraded habitats. MILLIONS OF POUNDS is being put into the moors to protect them and help them to recover. Fire puts all this investment at risk – restoration works can be wiped out by one bad fire. Attempts were made to light Soyland Moor over Easter weekend LAST YEAR alone and also at Warland, Todmorden. Basically, grass moor fires destroy wildlife and halt the recovery of the moorland. They also endanger the restoration work which is taking place on bare peat to reduce carbon loss and help combat climate change and increase the expense to households for the cleaning of drinking water which is gathered off the moorlands.

Let us make sure that the moors on our doorstep are protected for all, including the wildlife, to enjoy, and that no visitor to the area leaves with the memory of a moorland fire. If you would like any more information about the moorland on your doorstep, please go to www.magic.gov.uk

Investment Fraud Alert April 2015 – NS&I Clone

Fraudsters have set up a bogus website claiming to be the official site of National Savings & Investments and are contacting members of the public, cold calling them and offering them the chance to invest in 65+ Bonds (also known as Pensioner Bonds). Members of the public who are searching for the official website (for example on search engines) may be directed to the fake one which then asks them to supply contact information. Victims are then receiving a follow up e-mail and/or phone call from the fraudsters who are requesting evidence of identity documents and bank account details either over the phone or by sending the victims fake forms to fill out. A common name that appears on the emails sent by the fraudsters is ‘Kevin Archer’.

Avoid being a victim of fraud:

· Do not pass personal or banking information to companies that cold call you.

· Please note that the only domain name (website address) that is legitimate is http://wwwnsandi.com

· National Savings & Investments (NS&I) do not make sales calls to potential customers (cold calls) so do not enter into discussion with cold casllers claiming to be NS&I

If you have been a victim of fraud or suspect a company of fraud please contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via the online reporting tool at www.actionfraud.police.uk

Sneak-In burglary

Insecure, or ‘sneak-in’, burglary is 100% preventable at no cost whatsoever as it can only happen if a door or window has been left unlocked and/or open. The majority of offenders look for the path of least resistance when attempting to gain entry to a property and finding a door or window unlocked presents them with an attractive opportunity.

Approximately 20-25% of all burglaries in West Yorkshire are through an insecure door or window, this is a significant number of crimes that could have been prevented. Preventing this type of burglary isn’t a matter of upgrading the physical security in situ; it’s a matter of ensuring that physical security is used and that homes are secure.

There may be many occasions when it is deemed ‘OK’ to leave the door unlocked, you’re just nipping round to the neighbours for five minutes, you’re hanging out the washing, doing a bit of gardening, sat in the front room watching TV or popping to the shop. It should never be ‘OK’ to leave a door unlocked and getting into the habit of locking doors and windows is extremely important.
