Principles of Engineering

Week 1/1st 6 weeks

Stage 3 – Learning Plan: <August 25-29, 2014
Monday / Objective: Students will understand classroom procedures
Activities:
Students will complete student survey using index cards
Teacher will present classroom expectations, including electronics policy, fire drill procedure
Teacher will provide students with course syllabus and discuss course overview, materials list, grade distribution, etc.
Students will discuss and provide answers to essential question, “What does an engineer do?”, creating anchor chart as basis for Day 2 presentation on careers
Assessment: None
Materials: Index cards, chart paper, Post-It notes
Follow Up/HW: None
Tuesday / Objective: Students will differentiate between engineering and engineering technology, and between various engineering disciplines.
Activities:
Students will work in teams to complete card sort activity, matching engineering disciplines to descriptions; teacher will check group results
Teacher will present Careers in Engineering and Engineering Technology PowerPoint and discuss career opportunities with class
Assessment: Participation grade for number of card sort matches correct
Materials: Engineering Disciplines card sort, Careers in Engineering and Engineering Technology PowerPoint
Follow Up/HW: None
Wed/Thur / Objective: Students will create and maintain an engineering notebook in accordance with accepted professional standards.
Students will conduct a professional interview with an individual working in a student-selected engineering discipline and reflect on it in writing.
Activities:
Teacher will distribute engineering notebooks to students and present Engineering Notebook PowerPoint (as needed based on students experience with notebook use)
Teacher will guide students in setting up notebook with Title Page, Table of Contents, Use Agreement, and Goal Setting pages
Teacher will distribute POE Goal Setting sheet based on EOC exam content areas
Students will review Goal Setting sheet and set target percentages of mastery for each category
Teacher will distribute Professional Interview Rubric and review project requirements and deadlines with students
Students will take notes
Assessment: None
Materials: Composition books, Engineering Notebook PowerPoint, Goal Setting sheet, tape, Professional Interview Rubric
Follow Up/HW: Draft email requesting interview due Monday
Friday / Objective: Students will describe the six simple machines according to their attributes.
Activities:
Teacher will introduce Unit 1.1 Vocabulary and distribute vocabulary lists
Students will complete vocabulary notes
Teacher will introduce Quizlet as a vocabulary study tool
Teacher will begin presenting Simple Machines (Lever, Wheel and Axle, Pulley) PowerPoint
Students will take notes
Assessment: Levers exit ticket
Materials: Unit 1.1 Vocabulary lists, Simple Machines (Lever, Wheel and Axle, Pulley) PowerPoint, engineering notebooks
Follow Up/HW: Draft email requesting interview due Monday, Unit 1.1 Vocabulary quiz Wednesday
