In more recent times, fewer people are watching TV because of the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of streaming services.

Primetime television is the period of time where most people are watching their favourite show. Typically it is around 8 pm until 11 pm when people are finished with their work and catching up with their programs.

“You can watch shows whenever you want on Netflix, you might miss it [on tv]. And you can pause the shows on Netflix,” says Grade 11 student, Varsheeka Varatharajan

People used to plan around show timings to watch their favourite shows, and if they miss one episode, they can only hope there is a rerun or they have to purchase the DVD boxed set.But now with various streaming services, it is very different.

With an ease of use, more youth prefer to use it But now they can easily binge-watch with streaming sites such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime.

“A lot of popular shows go on Netflix and not as many go on regular tv.“ says Varuni Jeganraj, Grade 11 Student.

With streaming services, there is an established cost, while on the other hand TV subscriptions are based on specifics channels. If one family members love sports while others prefer watching their ethnic serials live, these packages become costly really fast.

“On Netflix, you can re-watch your favourite movies and shows whenever you want and when you compare it to regular tv it may be more preferred because it only costs a fixed rate,“ says Grade 11 Student Sathana Mohanrajah.

With convenient technology at youth’s disposable and streaming services possible, watching TV live may be in the past unless stations do something about it.

On Netflix you can re-watch your favourite movies and shows whenever you want and when you compare it to regular tv it may be more preferred because it only costs a fixed rate monthly whereas on tv some channels may have the shows you like but you’d have to subscribe to it and that price would be added on top of what you’re paying already
