THE ASUCD SENATE, BY A ROLL CALL VOTE OF 12-0-0, MOVED TO CONSIDER THIS BILL URGENT ON NOVEMBER 10, 2016.

An ASUCD Senate Bill to allocate $3,600.00 for hotel rooms for the UC Davis Students of Color Conference Delegation at UC Irvine.

BACKGROUND: The Students of Color Conference (SOCC) is the annual University of California Student Association (UCSA) event where students from every University of California campus come together to engage and inspire students of color and their allies to address issues of structural and cultural inequalities. SOCC is the oldest and largest UCSA conference that provides a safe space for students of color and their allies to strategize around statewide and campus-based actions. This year, it will be held from November 18-20, 2016 at UC Irvine. Given the current political climate, it is especially important during this time for students of color to have a safe space to educate each other, and bring the information they learn back to their respective communities at UC Davis.

The Office of Advocacy & Student Representation requires $11,432 to send 58 delegation members to SOCC. In 2015, we spent $20,830 to send our delegation to UC Merced; in 2016, we spent $16,585 to send our delegation to UC Berkeley. Last year, Student Affairs paid for all but $2,000. This year, we significantly cut down costs by reducing the number of students we will take to the conference and working with Fleet Services. Student Affairs was able to support our request at $8,000. Our delegates include folks from the African American Diaspora, Chicanx/Latinx community, API community, Native American community, and MESA community chosen through a blind application process; we are fully confident they will be able to represent their communities.

Section 1. The ASUCD Senate hereby allocations $3502.65 from Senate Reserves for 25 hotel rooms at Crowne Plaza Costa Mesa.

Spending Breakdown.

Item / Cost Per Unit / Number of Units / Total Cost
