Prep Work for OB

Each week you are to come to clinical on Monday with 5 of the questions answered each week. No question will be duplicated. You will have answered all of them by your last clinical day in OB.

a. Assessment of pregnant patient – include head to toe assessment, nursing inventions and a wellness nursing diagnosis

b. Explain in detail the different stages & phases of Labor – including what happens during each stage and phase and nursing inventions during each stage and phase and most commonly used drugs (during which stages and or phases)

c. Explain in detail the physical changes the mother goes through during the three semesters of pregnancy and postpartum stage

d. Explain in detail pain control both medications, alternative and complementary therapies for the laboring and postpartum patient – give nursing interventions and most common drugs.

e. Explain the recovery of vaginal delivery and nursing interventions and drugs

f. Explain the reasons for C-section and prep for mother and delivery of baby, most common drugs and nursing interventions

g. Who is able for a V-back delivery and why or why not?

h. Explain in detail the post delivery of a newborn, assessment, nursing interventions, and any drugs used.

i. What is PIH – explain in detail the causes, signs and symptoms, nursing interventions and drugs used and what if any bearing does this have on the baby and labor and delivery.

j. Explain in detail the gestational age assessment

k. Explain in detail what is gestational diabetes, who is at risk, signs and symptoms, nursing interventions, complications and drugs most commonly used, what effects does this have on the newborn

l. Compare and contrast preterm and post-term labor including effects on mother and baby and nursing interventions for both

m. Compare and contrast abruption and previa including effects on the mother and baby, nursing interventions and drugs used.

n. Compare and contrast between a physician, mid-wife, and doula

o. What is the role of a lactation nurse?
