Preaching: A Personal Bible Study

by Glen Davis

Contemplate each passage, asking “What does this passage tell me about preaching? What does it imply or assume about the content of my preaching? What does it imply or assume about the manner of my preaching?” Pay particular attention to any use of the words “preach”, “proclaim” or “reason”.

For example, one of the first verses listed is Matthew 24:14, “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” This is a fascinating verse with many implications for missions – but at present we are only concerned with what it says about preaching. In the blank space provided you would write something like, we preach the “gospel of the kingdom”

Examples of Biblical Preaching

These are merely snapshots of people preaching—these are not the lengthy sermons we find scattered throughout Acts (the text of those eighteen sermons constitute one quarter of the book of Acts). Engaging in a content analysis of them is worthwhile but beyond our concern at present.
