Help Please:

On Friday 1stand Saturday 2ndJuly 2016 Harlow Foodbank will be holding customer food collections at Tesco in Church Langley, Edinburgh Way and the Metro in the Harvey Centre in Harlow, and they urgently need volunteers to help. Volunteers normally cover one two-hour shift on one of the two days giving out shopping lists to customers as they arrive at the shop. Volunteer shifts run from 09.00-11.00 / 11.00-13.00 / 13.00-15.00 / 15.00-17.00 on both days. People interested in volunteering should contactMargaret O’Donovan on01279 724515or They issued the following statement;

HARLOW FOODBANK calls for volunteers & the community’s support in this summer’s Neighbourhood Food Collection

HarlowFoodbank is urging members of the community to help stop local people from going hungry by volunteering at the UK’s biggest food collection, Tesco’s Neighbourhood Food Collection which runs fromFriday 1stJuly to Saturday 2ndJuly.

The Neighbourhood Food Collection is run twice annually by Tesco and its partner charities, foodbank charity The Trussell Trust and food redistribution charity FareShare. The aim of the collection is to provide food to people in crisis across the UK, by encouraging Tesco customers to donate items in their local store. Since the collection launched in 2012, 30 million meals have been collected.

Harlow Foodbank, a member of The Trussell Trust network, provides emergency parcels containing three days’ supply of emergency food to people referred by a frontline professional, such as Citizens’ Advice, housing associations or children’s centres. In 2015-16, 2,744 were fed with emergency food supplies provided by Harlow Foodbank to people in crisis. Since April 2009 when it opened, and up to March 2016, Harlow Foodbank has fed 17,360 (11,508 adults & 5,852 children) people with emergency food.

With 1.1 million three-day emergency food supplies given to people in crisis last year alone, supermarket collections like this remain an important way to ensure that Trussell Trust foodbanks are stocked, and Harlow Foodbank is asking for local people’s support this summer. It’s easy to make a difference by either donating or volunteering. Volunteers can sign up to help for a little as a couple of hours, and will be needed on hand to offer customers a shopping list of items they can donate, gather the donated food at the store exit, thank customers and box up the food collected.

HarlowFoodbank is currently asking in particular for food donations of:

·  Long Life Milk & Fruit Juice

·  Tinned Meats

·  Squashes

·  Small & Medium Bags of Sugar

·  Tinned Sponge Puddings

·  Tinned Tomatoes

·  Drinking Chocolate (Water Based)

·  Chocolate Bars (Penguin, Club etc.)
