*HYMN OF PRAISE, No. 15 Nettleton

“Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing”

CALL TO CONFESSION - Liturgist Marlys Simmons For God so loved the world that He gave His only son. God has done the loving and the work. All we need to do is believe and accept that we are loved. At times we stubbornly refuse God’s love. We want to live life on our terms. But when we come to our senses, we know God is there ready to hear our confession, and embrace us as only a loving parent can.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION – Congregation

Everlasting God, forgive us for being consumed with petty concerns rather than seeking eternal values. We have pursued our own agendas, shoring up our egos, rather than offering you our fears and seeking our security in you. You are our dwelling place, yet we have strayed far from home and doubted your steadfast love. You bless us with abundance, yet we lament meaninglessness in the brevity of our lives. Grant purpose to our days and significance to our labors. Help us to receive each new day as a gift and to use your gift wisely and well. In Christ's name we pray. Amen.

SILENT MEDITATION AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our custom is to join hands for the Lord’s Prayer.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Our nation was founded by men and women who believed their destinies were shaped by God. Their past identity did not define them, only their future. We are invited to shake off the old self and embrace the new person that God would have each of us become. Friends: Believe the good news of the gospel. In Jesus Christ we are a new creation.

The Greatest Prayer - A Study of the Lord's Prayer

Recently, a graduating high school student charged with delivering a valedictory address to his classmates, went to the podium and proceeded to tear up his speech. In its place he read the Lord's Prayer. Did he have the faintest idea of the subversive material in that prayer?

This Fall, a new study group will form to look at this most famous prayer. We have all recited it so many times that it has lost some of its freshness. Do we know the background of its phrases and allusions, references Jesus may be making to his Jewish faith, and the history of Palestine in the first century? Begin now your own personal reading in preparation for our time together.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH – Congregation

We believe in God, as the origin and destiny of life and its meaning. This God is one. There is no other, and we will not give to ourselves or to others what belongs to God and God alone. We believe in Jesus as the Christ, the one who showed us what God is like, and what it looks like to live faithfully in response to God. There is no other Christ, and we will follow him as we follow no other.

We believe the God of Jesus encounters us in the whole of life – not in the special and extraordinary, so much as in the ordinariness of our lives. There is no other force, destiny, or magic at work in the world that compares to him. And we will welcome the presence of God’s Spirit with us, everywhere, in all things, and in all people. Amen

*THE HYMN RESPONSE Paul E. Hoffman

There is nothing in the heav’ns above, nor in hidden depths of earth

that can keep the Savior’s love from us, for by his sinless death

God’s Son has conquered ev’ry foe. There is nothing left to fear.

For God’s love, God’s love is always near.

“Do Not Grow Weary in Doing What Is Right”

SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER and Response

God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue forever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.

*HYMN OF DEDICATION

“Spirit Song”

O, let the Son of God enfold you with his Spirit and his love,

Let him fill your heart and satisfy your soul.

O, let him have the things that hold you, and his Spirit like a dove

Will descend upon your life and make you whole.

(REFRAIN) Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs,

Jesus, O Jesus, come and fill your lambs.

O, come and sing this song with gladness, as your hearts are filled with joy,

Lift your hands in sweet surrender to his name.

O, give him all your tears and sadness; give him all your years of pain,

And you’ll enter into life in Jesus’ name.
