Directions: Most employers expect you to supply them with three references. Complete this worksheet to create a strong reference list.

1.  Review your list of networking contacts. List five unrelated people who could provide you with a good reference.

2.  Circle the three people in the above list who you believe could best vouch for your work or school performance. They should also be willing to write strong letters of recommendation.

3.  Ask the three people you selected whether they are willing to act as references and write letters of recommendation. Verify their titles, correct names, current addresses, and other contact information. List each name and title below.

4.  Review the sample list of references (5b Smpl Refs List.pdf). Following its format, create your own reference list. List names alphabetically. Center your own name and contact information above the list.

5.  Use the following checklist to review the effectiveness of your reference list. Make any necessary changes.

r None of my references is related to me.

r Each reference gave me permission to use their name.

r I have supplied each reference with a copy of my resume.

r Each reference will provide me with a positive verbal recommendation.

r My references agree to write letters of recommendation.

r I checked all contact information for accuracy.

r Every time a reference helps me, I will thank him or her.
